How to Raise Graveyard Quality Fast: Graves, Decor and Milestones

Bury bodies with no red skulls under the best headstone and fence you can craft, fill every decoration spot in your graveyard areas, build the fence and road upgrades and clear the debris. A grave scores its wreaths minus the body's red skulls, never more than its white skulls.

Graveyard quality adds up every grave and decoration inside your graveyard areas, plus the fence and road upgrades, minus leftover debris. To raise it fast, bury red-free bodies under your best headstone and fence, fill every decoration spot, build the upgrades and clear the debris.

That is the whole trick, but the details decide whether you hit 20 quickly or stall behind a row of sad wooden signs. Below: the fastest points for the effort, the skull-row rule that scores every grave, every headstone, fence and decoration value, the area layouts, the milestones and what they unlock, and the full 1,552-point build. All values are for version 1.008.

Keeper's note: bodies are the bottleneck, benches are not

Corpses arrive a few at a time and only when the Morgue has room. Decorations need nothing but materials. Every quest that asks for graveyard quality reads the meter, never the number of bodies in the ground, so when you are short of corpses, build furniture for the dead instead.

How graveyard quality is calculated

The meter in the Graveyard adds up four things. Graves, decorations and debris count only when they stand inside a placed graveyard area; the fence and road upgrades need no area:

  • Graves. Each filled grave adds its own score (next section). An empty pit, or a grave with a body that is not covered yet, counts -3.
  • Decorations. Benches (3 or 5), monuments (2, 4 or 6), flower beds (2, 4 or 6), lanterns (2 or 5), columbaria (12 or 20) and the Crypt (10), each on a spot of the matching type.
  • Upgrades. Upgrade Fence I (+10), Upgrade Fence II (+20) and Upgrade Road and Paths (+10) take no spot at all.
  • Debris, as a penalty. Stumps -2, trees -1 to -3, bushes -1 to -2, stones, ore, broken barrels and trash -2 to -3. You can place an area over all of this, and it keeps counting against you until you clear it.

The areas themselves are free and worth nothing on their own. A lantern standing outside an area, in the Yard for example, adds nothing either.

The skull-row rule: how one grave scores

Every grave holds one headstone (top slot) and one fence (bottom slot), set from the grave window. Each piece carries wreaths, and the body brings red and white skulls. The score is:

grave = headstone wreaths + fence wreaths - red skulls, but never more than the body’s white skulls.

The grave window draws this as rows. Each wreath fills one row. Rows holding a red skull swallow wreaths first and score nothing. Every wreath that then lands on a white-skull row is worth one point. Wreaths left over once the white skulls run out are wasted, and so are white skulls with no wreath on them.

Body (red / white) Headstone + fence Wreaths Grave score Why
0 / 4 Wooden Cross I + Wooden Fence I 3 3 The wreaths are the limit
3 / 4 Gravestone I + Stone Fence I 7 4 7 - 3 = 4, white cap 4
5 / any Wooden Sign + Wooden Fence I 2 -3 2 - 5, a grave can go negative
0 / 3 Marble Cross II + Marble Fence II 14 3 Marble wasted on a poor body
0 / 14 Marble Cross II + Marble Fence II 14 14 The perfect grave

The rule of thumb: the ideal burial body has zero red skulls and exactly as many white skulls as your best pair has wreaths. Red skulls eat decoration; white skulls set the ceiling.

Getting a body ready for the ground

A corpse has no quality of its own: its skulls are the sum of its six organs plus whatever sits in its pockets. Three habits cover most of the gain: empty the pockets (Fat and Blood are one red skull each, Flesh is a white one to keep), embalm for white skulls, and send red-heavy bodies to the resurrection table or the crematorium instead of the ground. The cleanest delivered bodies sit at 0 red and 5 white, or 3 red and 7 white, so any grave above 7 points needs embalming or organ improvement first. The corpse quality guide has every organ, every mixture and the step-by-step 14-point body.

Headstones and fences: every value

Tech (own price) Headstone + fence (wreaths) Best grave Materials for the pair
Wooden Sign (free, story) Wooden Sign (1), no fence 1 2 Board, 2 Stick
Wooden Gravestones I (5 red, 2 green) Wooden Cross I (2) + Wooden Fence I (1) 3 4 Wooden Plank, 4 Bronze Nails
Wooden Gravestones II (20 red, 5 blue) Wooden Cross II (3) + Wooden Fence II (2) 5 4 Wooden Plank, 4 Iron Nails
Stone Gravestones I (50 red, 10 blue, Nun 25) Gravestone I (4) + Stone Fence I (3) 7 6 Polished Stone
Stone Gravestones II (100 red, 30 blue) Gravestone II (5) + Stone Fence II (4) 9 6 Carved Stone, 4 Iron Detail
Marble Gravestones I (200 red, 50 blue) Marble Cross I (6) + Marble Fence I (5) 11 8 Polished Marble
Marble Gravestones II (300 red, 100 blue) Marble Cross II (7) + Marble Fence II (7) 14 6 Carved Marble, 4 Advanced Detail

The headstone and the fence sit in separate slots and the grave simply adds their wreaths, so the two pieces do not have to come from the same tier. Where to craft them:

The Building mastery needed climbs from 1 (Wooden Sign) to 7 (Marble Cross II and Marble Fence II). Fitting a piece on a grave also counts as Building work, so keep an axe or pickaxe on the toolbar while you decorate. Crafting and setting these pieces costs 0.2 insanity per swing (0.1 with the Grave Builder perk), which adds up over a big graveyard: see energy and insanity.

The gates on the way

  • Wooden Gravestones II needs only Wooden Gravestones I. No reputation, so 5-point graves wait only on Iron Nails, not on Agatha.
  • Stone Gravestones I needs Columbariums I, Graveyard Keeper III and Nun reputation 25. Agatha’s reputation comes from Holy Moly!, Nun of Your Business and The Nun with the Hairy Ass, 10 each, and that last quest asks for graveyard quality 20. The same gate holds back Graveyard Decor I, and between them they open 13 graveyard technologies. Buy Columbariums I and Graveyard Keeper III early so the gate opens the moment her reputation arrives.
  • Stone Gravestones II needs Graveyard Path and Fence I; Marble Gravestones I needs Stone Gravestones II; Marble Gravestones II needs Graveyard Path and Fence II. At 300 red and 100 blue, Marble Gravestones II ties Graveyard Decor II as the most expensive single node in the whole tech tree. The tech priorities guide shows where it fits.

Graveyard decorations: every value

Decorations are built from the graveyard Blueprint Desk, each on a spot of its own type, and demolishing one refunds its full cost, so upgrading a bench never wastes the old one.

Columbarium spots are the richest real estate in the graveyard: a Columbarium II beats even a perfect grave. The Crypt is the shortcut, since it fills a columbarium spot without a single urn.

The Ash budget for columbaria

An Urn with Ashes I is 3 Ash and 1 Clay Urn at the Formulation Bench (Anatomy 2), so one Columbarium I eats 24 Ash. Crematorium I gives 5 Ash and 1 Salt per body, which means 5 burns per columbarium, or 3 with the Cremator perk that doubles the output. Crematorium II gives 7 Ash, so 4 burns. Urn with Ashes II adds 1 Polished Marble per urn and needs Anatomy 5. The crematorium opens with Body Places I (5 red, 5 green). Each burn still pays the body’s Burial Certificate and 1 red plus 2 blue tech points, so the corpses you would never bury become columbarium points instead of dead weight in the Morgue.

Best graveyard layout: areas and spots

The graveyard is built from free 12 x 12 areas. There are 10 buildable types, each limited to 2 copies (the pre-built Grave Area I counts as one), so 20 areas in all. The best score column is each area filled with the top piece for every spot.

Area Unlocked by Graves Bench Monument Flower bed Lantern Columbarium Best score
Grave Area I Graveyard Keeper I 6 1 – – – – 89
Grave Area II Graveyard Keeper II 6 – 1 – – – 90
Grave Area III Graveyard Keeper III 4 – 1 2 – – 74
Grave Area IV Graveyard Keeper IV 4 – 1 – 2 – 72
Walkway Area I Graveyard Decor I – 2 1 2 2 – 38
Columbarium Area I Columbariums I – 2 – 2 1 2 67
Columbarium Area II Columbariums II – 1 2 – 1 2 62
Mixed Area I and II Mixed Graveyard I and II 4 – – 2 – 1 88 each
Mixed Area III Mixed Graveyard III 4 – 2 – – 1 88
How sure are these layouts?

The spot counts of Grave Area I (6 graves, 1 bench) are confirmed in play. The other layouts are not yet confirmed by a second check; they fit the 1,552 maximum that two players have reported, but that total cannot tell a monument spot from a flower-bed spot (both top out at 6) or a bench spot from a lantern spot (both 5). Check the spot icons before you craft a stack of one type.

Three rules shape every layout:

  • A filled grave locks its area. An area cannot be removed while anything stands on it, and only an empty pit can be taken down, so undoing a filled grave costs an Exhumation Certificate (see below). Plan before the first burial, not after the tenth.
  • Grave Areas I and II hold the most graves (6 each). They are the backbone of a high score once you can make 14-point graves. Walkway and Columbarium areas hold no graves at all, which makes them the body-free half of the graveyard.
  • Space comes from expansions. Expand graveyard I costs 12 Piece of stone and is available after Certificate, Please; Expand graveyard II costs 12 Polished Stone and III costs 24 Polished Stone. They add no quality themselves, and how many areas each one makes room for is not confirmed. Each expansion also counts toward the Cemetery Expander inspiration.

Graveyard quality milestones and what they unlock

Quality What you get
10 Grave Expectations for Herbert at the Crossroads: +10 Herbert reputation, half of the 20 that opens Bronze Equipment (towers, barricades, bronze weapons). Resting Place I (1 Faith to claim)
20 The Nun with the Hairy Ass step for Agatha: with a manhole repair (2 Polished Bronze, 4 Polished Stone) it restores corpse deliveries and, with her other two quests, takes her past the 25 that opens stone gravestones and Graveyard Decor I. Resting Place II (3 Faith)
30 Resting Place III (5 Faith)
60 Resting Place IV (8 Faith)
120 Resting Place V (12 Faith)
200 Resting Place VI (20 Faith) and the Home Sweet Tomb achievement, held by about one player in ten
1,552 The theoretical maximum in version 1.008

Resting Place is an Anatomy inspiration: each level asks for a new record, and claiming all six costs 49 Faith. The burial achievements run on a separate counter: True Graveyard Keeper wants 50 bodies buried, and cremated bodies do not count toward it.

Sermon money: what each point is worth

Beyond its two quests, the Resting Place inspiration and Home Sweet Tomb, graveyard quality does exactly one thing: coins at the sermon. When a Wrath sermon succeeds, the Donation box receives your graveyard quality multiplied by the prayer’s success coins. A failed sermon pays none of it, and quality never adds parishioners or Faith: those come from Likes and church quality.

  • Rate: between 5 and 30 bronze per point among the prayers you can actually hold. Money Prayer III, Combo Prayer III and Prayer for Storms pay the top rate.
  • Example: a 200-point graveyard turns a successful Money Prayer III into 60 silver from the graveyard term alone.
  • Modifiers: the Performer perk raises the rate, and an Excessive zombies penalty cuts it.

The prayers list and the sermons and Faith guide have the full tables.

How to raise graveyard quality fast, step by step

Step 1: quality 10 for Grave Expectations

Grave Area I is already there, with 6 grave spots and a bench spot, and the graveyard chest at the start holds a Rusty Shovel and 3 Wooden Signs. The story hands you Graveyard Keeper I around your first sign; otherwise it costs 2 red and 5 green.

  1. Buy Wooden Gravestones I (5 red, 2 green) for the 3-wreath pair.
  2. Empty the Fat and Blood from every body before you lower it, and keep bodies with no red skull and at least 3 white skulls for these graves.
  3. Three such graves give 9. An Exterior Bench I adds 3: total 12.
  4. Clear every stump, tree and stone inside the area, and never dig a grave you cannot fill the same day.

Digging and filling a grave also pay 2 red tech points each, so the graveyard funds its own wooden crosses.

Step 2: quality 20 for Agatha

Fill all six graves of Grave Area I at 3 points (18) and keep the bench (3): 21. Then add, in this order:

  • Wooden Gravestones II (20 red, 5 blue), once you can forge Iron Nails at the Iron Anvil: the pair is worth 5 on bodies with no red skull and 5 or more white skulls, so four such graves plus the bench already make 23.
  • Graveyard Keeper II (5 red, 5 green, 5 blue): Grave Area II and Monument I (+2).
  • Graveyard Keeper III (20 red, 20 green): Grave Area III and Flower Bed I (+2).
  • Columbariums I (10 green, 10 blue), bought in the same pass: with Graveyard Keeper III it is the price of entry for the stone tier.

Step 3: stone, crypts and the free 20

Once Agatha reaches 25 reputation, the middle game opens all at once:

  • Stone Gravestones I for 7-point graves (6 Polished Stone per pair). Raw bodies do not get there: the cleanest deliveries, pockets emptied, score 5 (0 red, 5 white) or 4 (3 red, 7 white) under this pair. A full 7 needs an embalmed body (see the 14-point body below).
  • Graveyard Decor I (40 green, 10 blue) for Walkway Area I and Lantern I, then Mixed Graveyard I (30 red, 30 green, 10 blue) for Mixed Area I and the Crypt (+10, no urns).
  • Graveyard Keeper IV (80 red, 20 blue) for Grave Area IV and Monument II (+4).
  • Graveyard Path and Fence I (20 of each colour): Upgrade Fence I and Upgrade Road and Paths, +20 without using a spot. It also teaches Prayer for Repose.
  • Body Places I and a Crematorium I, so every red-heavy body you will not raise becomes Ash for Columbarium I (+12).

Step 4: 200 for Home Sweet Tomb, even without graves

Because decorations need no bodies, they alone can carry you past 200 if corpses are scarce. One way to fill eight areas with no marble, gold or steel at all:

Areas What goes in Quality
2 Walkway Area I 4 Exterior Bench I, 2 Monument II, 4 Flower Bed II, 4 Lantern I 44
2 Columbarium Area I 4 Exterior Bench I, 4 Flower Bed II, 2 Lantern I, 4 Columbarium I 80
2 Mixed Area I (grave spots unused) 4 Flower Bed II, 2 Crypt 36
2 Mixed Area II (grave spots unused) 4 Flower Bed II, 2 Crypt 36
No area Upgrade Fence I, Upgrade Road and Paths 20
Total 216

Every piece sits at or below Mixed Graveyard II, which costs 207 red, 180 green and 105 blue from scratch, plus Agatha’s 25 reputation and Body Places I for the urns. The four Columbarium I need 96 Ash, about 20 burns at Crematorium I; put Crypts in those spots instead and you still reach 208 without a single urn.

In practice you will mix this with graves: a 5-point wooden grave already beats an Exterior Bench I, and a 7-point grave beats any bench you can build. One player reports passing 200 with no bodies buried and no marble at all.

Step 5: the 1,552-point graveyard

The ceiling needs every area built twice, every spot filled with its best piece and 64 perfect graves:

Piece How many Each Total
Grave with Marble Cross II + Marble Fence II on a 0-red, 14-white body 64 14 896
Columbarium II 14 20 280
Flower Bed III 20 6 120
Monument III 16 6 96
Exterior Bench II 12 5 60
Lantern II 12 5 60
Upgrade Fence I + II and Upgrade Road and Paths – 10 + 20 + 10 40
Total 1,552

Graves supply 896 points, decorations and upgrades the other 656. The graveyard line up to Graveyard Decor II costs 1,187 red, 610 green and 625 blue from scratch. An Exterior Bench III (+7) and a Walkway Area II exist, but nothing unlocks them in 1.008.

The 14-point body

A 14-point grave needs a body at 0 red and 14 white. One starting-tier body arrives with 3 Fat and 1 Flesh in its pockets: without the Fat it sits at 0 red and 5 white, and three 3-star Solutions for Corpses take it to 0 red and 14 white. The numbered steps, the recipes and the variant for late bodies are in the corpse quality guide. Before you start carving, run ten Marble Cross II through the crafting calculator, and remember that each Marble Fence II takes twice the Carved Marble of a cross.

Exhumation: upgrading old graves

A filled grave never comes out for free. To dig a body back up, take off the headstone and fence, choose Exhume in the grave window and spend one Exhumation Certificate. Januarius sells them at the Village Tavern for 5 silver 50 bronze, 1, 2 or 3 in stock depending on his trade level, and players see the stock come back daily. The certificate must be in your backpack, not in a chest, and each swing costs 1 insanity.

The headstone and fence come off whenever you like; it is the body that costs a certificate, and its white skulls are the grave’s permanent ceiling. So exhume late and only once, when you can actually build 14-point graves, and touch each grave twice at most: first burial, final upgrade. One player who rushed an early layout had to buy 18 certificates, one a day, to undo it.

Common mistakes

  • Digging graves in advance. Every open pit is -3 until a body is covered in it. Dig when the body is on your shoulder.
  • Burying red-heavy bodies. Five red skulls under a 2-wreath pair is a -3 grave. Raise that body as a zombie or cremate it for Ash.
  • Forgetting the pockets. Fat and Blood are free red skulls to remove; Flesh is a white skull to keep.
  • Placing areas over a forest. Areas sit happily on trees, stumps and stones, and each one keeps subtracting 1 to 3 points until you clear it.
  • Laying out the graveyard after the first burials. A filled grave locks its area until you pay to exhume it. Decide where the six-grave areas go before you dig.
  • Over-preparing bodies. White skulls above your best pair’s wreaths score nothing today. Embalm toward 14 only once marble is within reach.
  • Expecting cremation to count. A burned body adds nothing to quality and nothing to True Graveyard Keeper; it only becomes quality once its Ash sits in a columbarium.
  • Rushing marble decor in the opening. The late graveyard nodes eat red points your workshop needs. Stay on the cheap wins until Agatha’s gate opens; the beginner guide shows what to buy first.
  • Waiting for quality to fill the church. It never adds parishioners or Faith, only coins on a successful sermon. If money is the goal, see money making.

FAQ

How do you increase graveyard quality in Graveyard Keeper 2?

Bury bodies with no red skulls under the best headstone and fence you can craft, fill the bench, monument, flower bed, lantern and columbarium spots of your graveyard areas, build Upgrade Fence I and Upgrade Road and Paths, and clear trees, stumps and stones inside your areas. Never leave a dug grave empty: an open pit costs 3 points.

Why does my grave only give 1 point, or a negative score?

A grave scores its headstone and fence wreaths minus the body's red skulls, and never more than the body's white skulls. A body with many red skulls drags the grave below zero, and a body with 1 white skull caps it at 1 whatever stone you use. Pick Fat and Blood out of the pockets before burial: each one is a red skull.

What is the max graveyard quality in Graveyard Keeper 2?

1,552 in version 1.008: 64 graves at 14 points (896) plus 656 from the best decorations and the fence and road upgrades. A single grave tops out at 14, with Marble Cross II and Marble Fence II on a body that has no red skulls and at least 14 white skulls.

How do I get graveyard quality 10 for Grave Expectations?

Buy Wooden Gravestones I (5 red, 2 green). Three graves with a Wooden Cross I and a Wooden Fence I, on bodies with no red skulls and at least 3 white skulls, give 9. An Exterior Bench I on the bench spot of Grave Area I adds 3, for 12. Clear the debris inside the area first.

How do I unlock stone gravestones?

Stone Gravestones I needs Columbariums I, Graveyard Keeper III and 25 reputation with Agatha, the Nun. Holy Moly!, Nun of Your Business and The Nun with the Hairy Ass pay 10 each, and the last one asks for graveyard quality 20. Until then, Wooden Gravestones II already gives 5-point graves with no reputation gate.

Does graveyard quality do anything besides quests?

It pays coins at the Wrath sermon: a successful sermon adds 5 to 30 bronze per quality point depending on the prayer, before perks. It also levels the Resting Place inspiration from 10 to 200 and unlocks the Home Sweet Tomb achievement at 200. It adds no parishioners, no Faith and no better corpses.
