Corpse Quality in Graveyard Keeper 2: Red and White Skulls, Autopsy, Embalming and What to Bury

A corpse has no quality of its own: its skulls are the sum of its six organs and its pocket items. White skulls cap a grave's score (14 at most); red skulls eat grave decoration but buy a zombie its perk slots. Bury white, raise red, burn the rest.

Question Short answer
What sets a corpse’s quality The sum of its six organs and its pocket items. Neither total drops below 0
What white skulls do Cap the score of the grave the body goes into. Nothing for a zombie
What red skulls do Cancel one wreath of grave decoration each, but give a zombie one perk or mastery slot each
Best possible grave 14: Marble Cross II + Marble Fence II on a body with 0 red and at least 14 white
Most skulls a delivered body carries 8 red and 7 white at most
Fastest fix for a burial body Pick out Fat and Blood (1 red each, cannot fail), leave Flesh (1 white) in
More white skulls Solution for Corpses, Injection for Corpses, white Organ Improver
More red skulls Solution for Zombies, Injection for Zombies, red Organ Improver, organ swaps
Do bodies rot No. Stored bodies never lose skulls; only one left on the ground eventually vanishes

How corpse quality works

Graveyard Keeper 2 does not grade a body. Its red and white skulls are added up from what is inside it: one organ in each of six slots, plus up to six pocket items. Swap an organ, pick a pocket or inject a mixture and the totals move with it. Every technique on this page is that one rule applied with a scalpel.

If you played the first game, forget freshness and fridges: corpses do not decay while stored in the Morgue.

Organ skull values

Each organ exists in six variants over three grades. Values read red/white, so “1/3” means 1 red skull and 3 white skulls. The Anatomy column is the mastery you need to take the organ out cleanly at bronze, silver and gold grade.

Organ Bronze variants Silver variants Gold variants Anatomy (bronze / silver / gold) Ticks
Skin 0/0 or 1/0 1/2 or 2/0 1/3 or 3/0 1 / 3 / 6 6
Bones 0/0 or 0/1 1/1 or 2/1 1/3 or 3/1 2 / 4 / 7 8
Skull 0/0 or 0/1 0/2 or 2/2 0/3 or 3/2 3 / 5 / 8 10
Heart 0/1 or 1/1 1/2 or 2/2 0/3 or 3/1 5 / 9 / 13 12
Brain 0/1 or 1/0 0/2 or 2/1 0/3 or 3/1 8 / 10 / 13 14
Guts 0/0 or 1/0 2/1 or 1/1 1/3 or 3/0 9 / 11 / 13 12

Notice that the gold “white” versions of Skin, Bones and Guts still carry 1 red skull each. That is by design, not a bug.

Pocket items: Fat, Blood and Flesh

Bodies arrive with 1 to 4 pocket items, and a body holds up to 6 (embalming mixtures use the same slots). Fat and Blood are 1 red skull each; Flesh is 1 white skull. Picking pockets never fails, needs no mastery and pays 1 blue tech point per item. It is the cheapest quality tool you will ever own: on a starting-tier body it alone brings red skulls down to 0 or 1.

Why some skulls are hidden

You only see an organ’s skulls once you have researched it. All six steps sit in the first rows of the Anatomy and Alchemy tree:

Technology Cost (red / green / blue) Reveals and unlocks
Soft parts Free when the first body hits the table Fat, Blood, Flesh
Skin and Bones 0 / 5 / 2 Skin, Bones, Butcher’s Kit
Skull and Teeth 5 / 0 / 5 Skull, Tooth
Autopsy, Advanced 0 / 0 / 20 Heart, Guts, Surgeon’s Kit
Embalming I 50 / 0 / 10 Solution for Corpses, Preservative, Embalming Table I
Autopsy, Master 10 / 30 / 10 Brain, Master Surgeon’s Kit, Autopsy Table II

Autopsy, Master sits behind Embalming I, so the Brain is the last organ you learn to read. Until then, a body’s displayed totals leave part of the picture out.

Red skulls vs white skulls

On a grave: white is the ceiling, red is the tax

A grave scores the lower of (headstone wreaths + fence wreaths - red skulls) and (white skulls). Three examples show how it bites:

  • A 3 red / 4 white body under a Gravestone I (4) and a Stone Fence I (3): 7 - 3 = 4, white cap 4, so the grave scores 4.
  • A 5 red body under a Wooden Sign and a Wooden Fence I (2 wreaths in all): 2 - 5 = -3. Yes, a grave can drag your graveyard down.
  • A 0 red / 3 white body under the marble pair (14 wreaths): capped at 3. Expensive stone cannot rescue a poor body.
Technology Best headstone + fence Wreaths Body for full marks
Wooden Gravestones I Wooden Cross I + Wooden Fence I 3 0 red, 3+ white
Wooden Gravestones II Wooden Cross II + Wooden Fence II 5 0 red, 5+ white
Stone Gravestones I Gravestone I + Stone Fence I 7 0 red, 7+ white
Stone Gravestones II Gravestone II + Stone Fence II 9 0 red, 9+ white
Marble Gravestones I Marble Cross I + Marble Fence I 11 0 red, 11+ white
Marble Gravestones II Marble Cross II + Marble Fence II 14 0 red, 14+ white

Wooden Gravestones II has no reputation gate, so wooden graves already reach 5. Stone Gravestones I needs Nun reputation 25 on top of its technology prerequisites. An open pit or an unfilled grave costs -3. The decoration side of the equation lives in the graveyard quality guide.

Max white skulls: the number that matters is 14

No grave scores above 14, so white skulls beyond your current wreath total are wasted. Delivered bodies never carry more than 7 white skulls; embalming and the white Organ Improver push past that (six white-improved organs plus one 3-star Injection for Corpses already reach 0 red / 21 white), but on a grave that is pure vanity. Match the body to the stone you can actually place.

On a zombie: red is the good stuff

Flip everything above. Each red skull is one slot for a node in the zombie’s talent trees, perk or mastery upgrade alike, and white skulls do nothing for a worker. The collar caps red skulls: Bronze 5, Golden 10, Steel 99. The body that would make a miserable grave is often your best future employee. The zombies guide covers perks and jobs.

What the Donkey brings: corpse tiers

The Donkey delivers on Gluttony, Lust and Pride, and only while the Morgue has a free slot. At one point he stops coming after a quarrel with Agatha: The Nun with the Hairy Ass (Nun reputation 10, graveyard quality 20, a repaired Crossroads manhole) gets deliveries going again and lets you choose No, A few or Lots of corpses, a setting you can change with Agatha on Wrath afterwards. Lots means up to 2 bodies per visit.

Better bodies come from Agatha’s quests:

Tier How you reach it Organs only (red / white) As delivered, pockets included (red / white) Gold organs Certificate
0 From the start 0-1 / 2-4 0-4 / 2-5 0% I (1 silver)
1 Brawns and Brains: 2 Wooden Kit I + 2 Stone Kit at Nun reputation 30, then ask again at 40 1-5 / 1-5 3-5 / 3-5 about 4% II (2 silver 50 bronze)
2 Second Brawns and Brains hand-in: 2 Furniture Kit I + 2 Building Kit I 2-6 / 2-6 4-6 / 4-6 about 15% III (5 silver)
3 The House at the Crossroads: 2 Wooden Kit II + 2 Furniture Kit II 3-7 / 3-7 5-8 / 4-7 about 20% III (5 silver)
4 Tier 3 during a God of dead blessing Copies of tier 3 Copies of tier 3 about 20% III (5 silver)

The gold-organ figure is the share of top-grade organs across a tier’s corpse kinds, not a dice roll per organ. Higher tiers carry more white skulls, but more red ones too: a late body is a better zombie and a better paycheck, not automatically a better grave.

A successful Prayer for Repose grants God of dead (45 minutes, 1 h 30 or 1 h 40 by grade): every body delivered during the blessing comes from the next tier up. Once The House at the Crossroads is done it gains nothing, because tier 4 copies tier 3.

Autopsy: operating without ruining the body

Everything happens at the Autopsy Table I, pre-built in the Morgue (the later Autopsy Table II runs the same operations with the same requirements): remove organs, insert organs into empty slots, swap organs on zombies and pick pockets. Each organ operation costs 3 energy per tick and 0.3 insanity per swing, and every removal pays 1 red + 1, 2 or 3 blue tech points by grade. Inserting pays nothing.

Perfect, fair or a Surgeon’s Error

At or above the organ’s Anatomy requirement every tick succeeds. Below it, each tick succeeds with a chance of your Anatomy divided by the requirement, and the count of successful ticks decides the result:

Organ Ticks Surgeon’s Error with fewer than Organ kept with at least
Skin 6 3 5
Bones 8 4 7
Skull 10 5 9
Heart 12 6 11
Brain 14 7 13
Guts 12 6 11

In between, the result is “fair”: the organ comes out and is destroyed, and an organ you were inserting is lost. Worked out from that per-tick rule, before the Surgeon talent’s head start: a bronze Skull (needs 3) at Anatomy 1 ends in a Surgeon’s Error about 79% of the time; one point short of a gold Heart (12 of 13) keeps the organ about three times in four; two points short drops that to 43%.

Keeper's note: a Surgeon's Error is forever

A Surgeon’s Error sits in the organ slot at -1 red and -1 white, and the body can never be raised as a zombie. The Organ Restorer that would fix it cannot be crafted, bought or found in 1.008. Never cut an organ you care about below its requirement, and on a body you plan to resurrect, operate only at or above the requirement: a single Surgeon’s Error rules it out for good.

Stacking Anatomy

Bonus Anatomy Notes
Anatomy talent nodes Up to +5 Keeper talents, see talents and inspirations
Butcher’s Kit on the toolbar +1 2 Bronze Detail + 1 Leather Scroll at the Jewelry Table, Smithing 3
Surgeon’s Kit on the toolbar +2 1 Iron Ingot + 2 Leather Scroll, Smithing 6
Master Surgeon’s Kit on the toolbar +4 1 Steel Ingot + 3 Leather Scroll, Smithing 10
Expert anatomist (talent) +4 At an Autopsy Table only
Vegetable salad +1 / +2 / +3 By grade, for one in-game day
Third Eye Salt +2 All masteries, 7 minutes 30 seconds
Prayer for Excellence blessing +1 All masteries

Talent nodes, a Master Surgeon’s Kit and Expert anatomist add up to 13, the highest requirement at the Autopsy Table, before any salad. Three more Anatomy talents shape your surgery: Surgeon starts every operation with 2 successful ticks, Treasure Hunter pays 10 bronze per organ removed, and Son of a butcher has no known effect in 1.008, whatever its tooltip promises (buy it only because it leads to the other two). Autopsy is grim work: at the insanity cap the game refuses it, so keep an eye on the energy and insanity guide.

Teeth, leather and fat: what body parts are for

No trader buys organs. The only body part that sells is Flesh (35 bronze base, the Baker from trade level II). The value is in what parts become:

Part Becomes Where Used for
Skull 1 Tooth (Anatomy 1, 4 ticks) Formulation Bench Summoning the Fairy in Chasing Fairy Lights with Dream Dust and a Comet’s Tail; alchemy (1 red + 1 green rune)
Skin 4 Leather Scroll Writing Desk Paper, notebooks and the three surgical kits
Fat 4 Melted Fat per Fat, with 2 Clay Plate + 20 Fuel Distillation Cube Solution and Injection for Corpses, incense, Ink, the Resurrection Lab door
Blood Magic bell (with 1 Bronze Ingot), alchemy Anvil, Laboratory A 1-blue-rune ingredient in 16 alchemy formulas
Flesh Food, or Baked meat with 1 Salt Kitchen Oven Energy, at +10 insanity per bite
Gold Heart, Brain, Guts Nothing: the gold organ is itself an alchemy ingredient, also listed as Dark Heart, Dark Brain and Dark Guts Laboratory Runes: Heart 1 red + 2 blue, Brain 3 blue, Guts 1 green + 2 blue; bronze and silver organs carry none

Teeth deserve a word, since players search for them: Melted Fat (3 red runes) plus a Tooth (1 red, 1 green) is exactly a red-skull Organ Improver, so a stripped skull and a rendered pocket of fat brew the improver that turns any organ gold. Studying the first organ of each kind at the Study Table also pays once; the Brain’s 30 blue points is the best of them.

Organ Improver: gold organs to order

Practical Potions (0 red, 100 green, 100 blue, after Alchemy, Advanced) unlocks the Organ Improver. At the Formulation Bench, 1 organ of any grade + 1 Organ Improver gives the gold version of that organ in the improver’s colour. It needs Anatomy 5 for Skin, Bones and Skull, Anatomy 7 for Heart, Brain and Guts, and costs 0.15 insanity per tick.

Organ With the white-skull improver With the red-skull improver Anatomy to insert the gold organ
Skin 1 red / 3 white 3 red / 0 6
Bones 1 red / 3 white 3 red / 1 white 7
Skull 0 / 3 white 3 red / 2 white 8
Heart 0 / 3 white 3 red / 1 white 13
Brain 0 / 3 white 3 red / 1 white 13
Guts 1 red / 3 white 3 red / 0 13
  • White-skull improver: 4 green runes at the Laboratory, for example Flour + Flour. Base price 4 silver.
  • Red-skull improver: 4 red + 1 green runes, for example Stone + Copper Nugget, Iron Ore + Flax, or Melted Fat + Tooth. Base price 5 silver.
  • The Alchemist sells both from trade level II, 10 in stock.

Six white organs total 3 red / 18 white; six red organs total 18 red, which only a Steel collar accepts. The catch is the reinsert: Heart, Brain and Guts need Anatomy 13 to go back in, and a failed insert loses the gold organ you just paid for.

Embalming: skulls without surgery

Embalming drops a mixture into a free pocket slot at the Embalming Table I (4 Oiled Plank + 1 Polished Bronze + 4 Glass). It needs only Anatomy 1 and runs on its own once started: 4 ticks for a Solution, 6 for an Injection. The Embalming Table II ticks twice as fast. A mixture can be taken out again at the Autopsy Table and re-applied.

Mixture Effect at 1 / 2 / 3 stars Recipe (Formulation Bench) Unlocked by Alchemist price (1 / 2 / 3 stars)
Solution for Corpses +1 / +2 / +3 white Melted Fat + Preservative Embalming I 1 / 10 / 50 silver (3 stars from trade tier III)
Injection for Corpses -1 / -2 / -3 red and +1 / +2 / +3 white Melted Fat + Preservative + Comet’s Tail Embalming III 2 / 12 / 70 silver
Solution for Zombies +1 / +2 / +3 red Alcohol + Preservative Reanimation Liquid 2 / 12 / 60 silver
Injection for Zombies +1 / +2 / +3 red and -1 / -2 / -3 white Alcohol + Preservative + Comet’s Tail Embalming III 3 / 13 / 80 silver

Star grade is rolled when you craft the bottle. Solutions are 8-step crafts (1, 4 or 8 successes for 1, 2 or 3 stars) and Injections 12-step crafts (1, 6 or 12). At Anatomy 6 for Solutions and 8 for Injections every step succeeds, so every bottle comes out at three stars. Not every player agrees on those thresholds, so if a batch ever comes out short, add a point or two. Expert anatomist does not help here: it only counts at the Autopsy Table.

Preservative is any Laboratory mix totalling exactly 3 green runes: three Berries, a Leaf and a Swamp mushroom, or Flour and a Leaf. The Alchemist sells it too (4 silver base). Embalming bodies also feeds the Embalmer inspiration (1, 5, 10, 30 and 50 embalmings).

Crafting your own bottles is far cheaper than a 50-silver 3-star Solution: the Melted Fat comes from the very Fat you pick out of burial bodies.

How to build a 14-point grave

  1. Research the stone. Marble Gravestones II (300 red, 100 blue) unlocks Marble Cross II and Marble Fence II at the Stonemason’s Workbench: 7 + 7 = 14 wreaths.
  2. Pick a low-red body. Starting-tier bodies are ideal. One tier-0 kind arrives with 3 Fat and 1 Flesh on organs worth 0 red / 4 white.
  3. Empty the red pockets. Remove the 3 Fat, keep the Flesh: 0 red / 5 white.
  4. Embalm. Three 3-star Solutions for Corpses add 9 white: 0 red / 14 white. Four pocket slots used, two to spare.
  5. Bury and decorate. Marble Cross II on top, Marble Fence II below: a grave worth 14.

Late bodies need one more step. The best burial kinds from tiers 3 and 4 sit at 3 red / 7 white once their pockets are picked: a 3-star Injection for Corpses takes them to 0 / 10, and two 3-star Solutions finish the job. Before marble, scale down: with Wooden Gravestones II a picked tier-0 body at 0 red / 5 white is already a perfect 5 with no embalming at all.

Do not over-prepare

Every white skull above your current wreath total scores nothing. Embalm to the stone you can place today, not to the marble you will unlock next month. Since a filled grave can only be reopened with an Exhumation Certificate (5 silver 50 bronze, one in stock at a time early on), plan to touch each grave twice at most: the first burial and the final marble upgrade.

Albert’s 8-red-skull zombie: Personal Zombie Zone

Personal Zombie Zone is the “8 red skull zombie quest”. After Concept for a Concert, Albert asks for an exceptional worker: a zombie with at least 8 red skulls, placed on a marked spot in the Plague Doctor’s Lab. He hands you 2 Golden Zombie Collars and 2 Reanimation Liquid for the job. The reward is +10 Albert reputation, which you need for the 50 gate of Plague Me Maybe, and the zombie leaves your zombie count: the only one that ever does.

Route to 8 red What it takes Example
Pick the right delivery Tier 3 bodies arrive with 5 to 8 red, pockets included; the best kinds carry 8 Leave the pockets alone: Fat and Blood are red skulls
Solution for Zombies +1 / +2 / +3 red per bottle in a free pocket slot; craft it after the Reanimation Liquid tech or buy it from the Alchemist A 5-red body + one 3-star bottle = 8
Red-skull Organ Improver Remove an organ, improve it, put it back A 0/1 bronze Skull becomes 3/2: +3 red, but the gold Skull needs Anatomy 8 to go back in
Organ swap Move a red-heavy organ from a body you do not need Both the removal and the insert must come out perfect
  1. Choose the body. All six organs, no Surgeon’s Error, pockets untouched.
  2. Aim for 8 to 10 red. Above 10, Albert’s Golden collar refuses the corpse.
  3. Prepare and raise. Collar in your backpack, liquid in an open chest in the Resurrection Lab, press Prepare at the Resurrection Table I, then pull the device on Envy (or during a Prayer for Storms blessing).
  4. Deliver the zombie, not the corpse. Pick up the risen zombie and carry it to the marked spot: the quest asks for a resurrected zombie there.

Albert gives two of each, so one Golden collar and one Reanimation Liquid stay with you afterwards: save them for your best crafter.

Why Albert wants this zombie (story spoiler)

Placing the zombie on Albert’s marked spot leads straight into the truth about his sister.

What to bury, what to raise, what to burn

Decide each body’s job before you pick up the scalpel, because the first cut often decides it for you.

The body Do this Why
Low red, white at or above your current wreath total Pick Fat and Blood, bury Full marks on the grave, plus the certificate and a burial for True Graveyard Keeper
Low red, white below your wreath total Embalm with Solutions for Corpses, then bury No surgery and no risk: the easiest way to fill the gap
5 red or more, all six organs, no Surgeon’s Error Resurrect (Bronze collar to 5, Golden to 10) Every red skull is a node slot
0 to 2 red, intact, and you need Carousel walkers or porters Resurrect Those jobs need no skill at all
High red and you need no zombie, or a Surgeon’s Error Strip what you want, then cremate Certificate, Ash, Salt and tech points with no grave space
A junk body during inspiration farming Practise surgery on it, then cremate Oops Surgeon counts errors, Butcher counts removals

Raise with care: the base zombie limit is 0 and every resurrection adds to your head count, which can cut your sermon income at the next limit check. The zombies guide explains the limit.

Burial vs cremation in numbers

Both pay the body’s Burial Certificate, which Januarius at the Village Tavern buys at a fixed price (1 silver, 2 silver 50 bronze or 5 silver by tier) and which earns a Like per sale up to a weekly cap. The certificate’s grade comes with the body’s tier, as the tier table above shows.

Burial Crematorium I Crematorium II
Certificate Yes Yes Yes
Byproducts – 5 Ash + 1 Salt (10 + 2 with Cremator) 7 Ash + 2 Salt (14 + 4 with Cremator)
Tech points 2 red to dig + 2 red to fill 1 red + 2 blue 1 red + 2 blue
Energy and insanity Spent per swing None, it burns on its own None
Graveyard quality Yes, through the grave score Nothing Nothing
Counts as a burial Yes No No

Everything left inside a body burns with it, so take your organs and pockets first. The river, at two fixed spots near the graveyard, pays nothing at all. Graveyard quality earns bronze on every successful sermon, which is why good graves pay twice: see sermons and Faith and the money-making guide.

Keeping the Morgue moving

Morgue capacity equals Morgue quality: the Autopsy Table I, each Corpse Pallet I and a Crematorium I add 1 slot apiece. Deliveries stop when every slot is full, and only a burial, a cremation, the river or a vanished body frees one: cutting organs out does not. Until you repair the front door (1 Iron Detail + 3 Oiled Plank, Building 3), the Donkey leaves bodies at the Corpse Dumping Point; a body left on the ground vanishes after about 75 real minutes off-screen, as a pile of ash and with no reward.

Common mistakes

  • Picking the pockets of a future zombie. Fat and Blood are red skulls; taking them out lowers the zombie’s perk slots.
  • Leaving Fat and Blood in a burial body. Each one cancels a wreath. They come out for free and never fail.
  • Pulling out Flesh “to clean up”. It is a white skull. Leave it in a burial body.
  • Cutting below the requirement on an organ you want. One point short already destroys a gold organ about 24 to 36% of the time, and further below the requirement a bad roll leaves a permanent Surgeon’s Error.
  • Burying a red-heavy body under cheap decoration. A 5 red body under 2 wreaths scores -3 and lowers your graveyard.
  • Over-preparing. White skulls above your wreath total are wasted; embalm for the stone you have.
  • Overshooting Albert’s zombie. The Golden collar stops at 10 red, so do not stack bottles past it.
  • Bringing Albert a corpse. The quest wants a risen zombie placed on the marked spot.
  • Cremating a body you meant to harvest. Organs and pocket items burn with it.
  • Calling the white Organ Improver bugged. Gold white Skin, Bones and Guts carry 1 red skull each by design.
  • Buying Son of a butcher for cheaper autopsies. It has no known effect in 1.008; it is only a step toward Surgeon and Treasure Hunter.
  • Leaving bodies on the ground. Repair the morgue door early so deliveries land on pallets instead of outside, where a forgotten body eventually vanishes.

FAQ

How does corpse quality work in Graveyard Keeper 2?

A body has no quality score of its own. Its red and white skulls are the sum of its six organs (Skin, Bones, Skull, Heart, Brain, Guts) and its pocket items: Fat and Blood are 1 red skull each, Flesh is 1 white. Change an organ or a pocket item and the total changes with it.

Are red or white skulls better?

It depends on the body's job. For a grave, white skulls are the ceiling of its score and every red skull cancels one wreath of decoration. For a zombie, each red skull is a slot for a perk or mastery node and white skulls do nothing.

What is the maximum number of white skulls you need?

14. The best headstone and fence, Marble Cross II and Marble Fence II, give 14 wreaths, so a grave never scores more than 14 however many white skulls the body carries. A delivered body has at most 7 white skulls; embalming and the white Organ Improver make up the rest.

How do I get a zombie with 8 red skulls for Albert?

Personal Zombie Zone asks for a zombie with at least 8 red skulls. Albert gives you 2 Golden Zombie Collars (they accept up to 10 red) and 2 Reanimation Liquid. Use a late-tier body with all six organs and its pockets untouched, top it up with a Solution for Zombies if needed, raise it on Envy (or any day during a Prayer for Storms blessing) and carry the zombie, not the corpse, to his marked spot.

What are teeth for in Graveyard Keeper 2?

A Tooth comes from any Skull at the Formulation Bench (1 Skull = 1 Tooth, Anatomy 1) after the Skull and Teeth technology. You need one to summon the Fairy at the Kitchen Table, and it is a 1 red + 1 green rune alchemy ingredient: Melted Fat + Tooth is a red-skull Organ Improver. No trader buys teeth.

Do corpses rot in Graveyard Keeper 2?

No. Bodies stored in the Morgue keep their skulls indefinitely. Only a body left lying on the ground disappears, after about 75 real minutes off-screen, leaving a pile of ash and paying nothing.
