How to start it

During “First... Sludge?”, talk to Herbert in front of the Barracks once Swords and Bell (12 Barracks quality and 1 Magic bell) and Hooligans for Hire (the first mercenary payment) are done. He gives you the red banner and 2 Healing Potions.

After: First... Sludge?, Swords and Bell, Hooligans for Hire

Tips

  • At this point the only realistic entry is the mercenary squad (8 defense power) plus two Barricade I (2 each), exactly 12. You have no zombie squad slot yet: the first Defender's Emblem is this battle's reward.
  • Every enemy is a Wild Zombie (15 health, 4 damage per hit), so Rusty Armor and the starting sword are enough if you stay with your squad.
  • Carry your squad banner to the enemy flags: the squad only advances while you hold its banner. Leaving the mercenaries idle at the first flag is a common way to lose.
  • Reporting the win to Herbert completes “First... Sludge?”: +10 reputation with Herbert, 1 Town Gratitude, the First Blood achievement and the Battle Potions I technology revealed.
  • The game saves only when you sleep: go to bed after the win before exploring further.
