How to Raise Town Gratitude and Likes (the Thumbs Up)

Town Gratitude is a storable item worth 5 Likes, the thumbs-up counter that sets your Wrath sermon attendance. Earn Likes from battles, quests, Town orders and trader sales, and raise the cap (Town quality, up to 200) by giving Linda Green Scrolls on Lust.

On this page

Every parishioner who shuffles into your church on Wrath costs you exactly one Like. No Likes, no crowd; no crowd, no Faith and no coins in the Donation box. The Town is grateful, but only in measured, capped, weekly instalments, so the trick is to farm gratitude like any other crop: from several fields at once, and never past what the barn can hold.

This page is about earning Likes and raising the cap. For the crates, the urgent versus regular rule and the Warehouse payout, see the Town orders and trading guide.

The three numbers that run the system
  1. One Town Gratitude = 5 Likes. It is an item you use, not the counter itself.
  2. Likes are capped by Town quality: 10, then 20 once the Port opens, then +1 per Green Scroll, up to 200. Anything above the cap is lost.
  3. Sermon attendance is the lower of Likes and Church quality. Each parishioner spends one Like.

Town Gratitude vs Likes: what each one is

Players say “gratitude” for both, and the two are easy to mix up. They are different things, and the difference decides whether your hard-won thumbs-ups survive the week.

Term What it is How it goes up How it goes down
Likes The thumbs-up counter on your screen Town orders, Likes-tagged sales, Burial Certificates, using Town Gratitude Only sermons, one Like per parishioner. Likes never decay on their own
Town Gratitude An item worth +5 Likes when used Battle wins, quest rewards, buying from Januarius Using it. It stacks to 100, cannot be destroyed and no trader buys it
Town quality The cap on Likes 10, then 20, then +1 per Green Scroll given to Linda Not by itself
Church quality The other half of attendance Church furniture, plus zombies in the Choir and at the Organ Not by itself

Two consequences follow. First, the Likes counter cannot store more than the cap, but a stack of Town Gratitude items can: it is the only way to bank Likes. Second, Likes earned while you sit at the cap are lost, and raising the cap adds nobody to the pews while Church quality is lower still. Always fix the smallest number first.

Two things you may have read about are out of reach in version 1.008: a Prayer for Likes and a Like Master perk. Both are present in the game, but nothing unlocks either of them, so no prayer or perk refunds Likes after a sermon.

Every way to earn Likes

Way to earn Likes How often Day
Town Gratitude from battle wins 6 to 16 items per win (30 to 80 Likes) Each battle won Mostly Sloth
Town Gratitude from quests 1 to 3 items per reward, a few late quests more Once per quest Any
Town Gratitude bought from Januarius 5 Likes per 10 silver at his first tier Stock of 1, 2 or 5 Any
Town orders 10 to 75 per order, +5 to +35 with Happy supplier Two orders at a time Accept on Pride
Likes-tagged goods sold to traders Up to 15 / 30 / 50 per trader per week, by shop tier Weekly, resets on Pride Any
Burial Certificates sold to Januarius 1 per certificate First 5 of each grade per week (10 or 20 at his higher tiers) Any

Patch 1.008 raised the Likes paid by orders, by trades and per item, doubled most battle payouts of Town Gratitude and buffed Happy supplier. Older numbers you may have read are low.

Town Gratitude from battles

Battles pay some of the biggest lump sums of Likes in the game, and the early fights arrive exactly when your Likes are scarcest. A defeat only costs that fight’s rewards, so you can retry.

Battle Day Town Gratitude Worth in Likes
Break Through to the Port Any 8 40
Eastern Districts: Active Scouting, Eastern Districts Purge, Market Square Purge Sloth 8 each 40 each
Central Districts Purge: Part I and Part II Sloth 8 each 40 each
Closing the Western Floodgate, Battle at the Lake, and one late story battle Sloth 16 each 80 each
Closing the Eastern Floodgate: Part I and Part II Sloth 16 per part 160 for the pair
Operation POTATO: Part I and Part II Sloth 16 per part 160 for the pair
Break Through to the Bathhouse Basement Any None (keys and a banner instead) 0
Sewer Brawl I and Sewer Brawl II Any 6 each 30 each
Sewerena, rounds 1 to 7 Any 8 to 16 per round 40 to 80 per round

The story fights plus both Sewer Brawls pay 172 Town Gratitude, or 860 Likes, more than four full refills of the late-game cap. That is why you should not pop them the moment they arrive: keep the stack and spend it only when the counter has room. The two-part fights pay out once Part II is won. Army building for each fight is in the battles guide.

Town Gratitude from quests

Quest rewards are smaller but steady: most pay 1 to 3 Town Gratitude, and a handful of later quests pay up to 6. The Town Gratitude page lists every quest that pays it; these are the ones most players meet first:

Buying Town Gratitude from Januarius

Januarius in the Village Tavern is the only seller. He charges 10 silver a piece at his first tier; whether the price climbs to 20 and then 50 silver at his higher tiers is not settled in version 1.008, so read the tag before you buy in bulk. He keeps a thin stock: 1 at his first tier, 2 after Campaign of Thrones and 5 after Press for Cash. Nobody, Januarius included, buys Town Gratitude back.

At 10 silver that works out at 2 silver per Like. Early on that is steep, since a fresh Keeper starts with pocket change. By mid game coins stop being the bottleneck while Likes and Faith do not, so empty his shelf every time you pass and store the items.

Keeper's note: pay with certificates

A trade window is settled as one basket, and only the balance has to fit the trader’s purse. Januarius starts with just 10 silver and earns 75 bronze a day at his first tier, so selling him five gold Burial Certificates (25 silver) can stall. Put his Town Gratitude (or anything else you want from his shelf) in the same trade as the certificates: whatever you buy comes off what he owes you, so his purse only has to cover the difference, and you still collect the certificate Likes.

Town orders: the weekly Likes engine

Orders are the steadiest Likes source once the Town reopens. You accept up to two at a time on Pride, fill them with packed Supply crates, and collect 10 to 75 Likes each, plus the crates’ base price in coins (50 bronze to 2 silver each). Two slots top out around 150 Likes a week, or 220 with Happy supplier, so pick the two best-paying orders whose crates you can actually produce. Supply: Kitchen Utensils fills 50-Like urgent orders at both the tier I Alchemist and Brewery, and Supply: Fabric is the easiest early crate (plan ten of them).

Deliver before Pride, not on it: anything left in the crates when Pride starts is sold at base price and earns no Likes. How the board works, the urgent versus regular rule, every order by shop and tier and every crate recipe are in the Town orders and trading guide. Claiming 25 orders earns Merchants’ Best Friend.

Happy supplier is a Book writing perk right after Good fellow, for one inspiration point. It adds Likes to every order, up to +35 on the biggest ones. More in talents and inspirations.

Likes from trading: every trader’s weekly allowance

Goods with the Likes label pay Likes on top of coins when you sell them. Two limits apply at once: each item has its own weekly allowance, and each trader has a weekly total of 15, 30 or 50 Likes depending on his shop tier (Herm: 2, 30, 50). Both reset on Pride. Variety beats volume: five different goods fill a cap faster than a mountain of one.

“5 for 40” below means up to 5 Likes a week for selling 40 of that good.

Trader Weekly cap (tier I / II / III) Easy Likes at tier I Big Likes at tier III
Januarius 15 / 30 / 50 Burial Certificates I, II, III: 5 for 5 of each grade 20 for 20 of each grade; Beer 20 for 200
Herm 2 / 30 / 50 River fish fillet: 2 for 5 Fillet 5 for 10; Wheat, Carrot, Beet, Cabbage, Onion: 5 for 50 each
Apothecary 15 / 30 / 50 Salt and Simple Incense: 5 for 5; Fragrance and Alchemy Flasks I: 5 for 10 Magnificent Candle 40 for 10; Pretty Candle and Fancy Incense 20 for 10
Vegetable Stand 15 / 30 / 50 Wheat 5 for 40, Carrot 5 for 30, Beet and Cabbage 5 for 20 Pumpkin 20 for 20 to 40; Onion and Cabbage up to 15
Tailor 15 / 30 / 50 Flax: 15 for 90 Flax Thread and Fabric: 50 for 300 each
Furniture Maker 15 / 30 / 50 Bronze Detail 10 for 50; Polished Bronze 10 for 20; Oiled Plank 5 for 30 Wooden Joint 40 for 20; Furniture Kit II 30 for 10
Baker 15 / 30 / 50 Flour 10 for 50; Fabric 5 for 20 Flour 40 for 200; Flesh 20 for 20
Fish Stand 15 / 30 / 50 Breadcrumb Bait 10 for 30 Live Bait 30 for 30; Insect Bait 30 for 60
Alchemist 15 / 30 / 50 Paint, Lacquer, Dream Dust, Weak Growth Elixir: 5 for 5 each Miracle Growth Elixir 30 for 10; Philosopher Stone, Tannin Liquid, Alkali, Umami: 20 for 10 each
Jeweler 15 / 30 / 50 Polished Bronze 10 for 40; Bronze Scrap 5 for 30 Polished Bronze 40 for 160; Bronze Scrap 20 for 120
Builder 15 / 30 / 50 Reinforced Plank 8 for 20; Polished Stone 8 for 40 Carved Stone 30 for 15; Carved Marble and Building Kit II 30 for 10
Smithy 15 / 30 / 50 Bronze Scrap 8 for 40; Bronze Ingot 8 for 20 Engineering Details 40 for 20; Advanced Detail 20 for 20
Tavern 15 / 30 / 50 Beer, Apple Cider, Berry Cider, Blueberry Cider: 5 for 40 each 25 for 100 each
Brewery 15 / 30 / 50 Empty Bottle and Wheat 5 for 40; Apple Juice and Berry Juice 5 for 20; Hops 5 for 30 Juices 20 for 60 each; Wheat 15 for 80

These per-item figures match version 1.008 and may move if the developers retune them. Two takeaways hold either way:

  • The early easy wins are the Tailor (one crop of 90 Flax fills his whole tier I cap), the Apothecary (Salt and Simple Incense, 5 Likes for only 5 units each) and the Alchemist, who pays Likes for the Paint you are probably already making for money.
  • Late game, trading alone outruns the cap. With every shop at tier III, 13 traders (Januarius, Herm and the 11 shop plots you can actually build) at 50 Likes each add up to 650 Likes a week, more than three times the 200 cap. From then on Town quality, not income, is your limit.

Upgrading a shop does double duty: its trader’s Likes cap climbs from 15 to 30 to 50, and each tier adds two new orders, one urgent and one regular. Newer is not always richer: the Jeweler’s and Builder’s tier III orders pay less than their tier II ones. See Town restoration for costs.

The buy-back flip

Some players buy a Likes-tagged good from a trader and sell it straight back to farm Likes for a small coin loss. Selling back in the same trade does not count, and whether doing it as two separate trades still works in 1.008 is disputed. Test it on a save before you rely on it. Buying Town Gratitude from Januarius is the guaranteed way to turn coins into Likes.

Likes do not change prices. A trader’s price follows his stock, not your popularity, and order crates are always paid at their base price. The link between Likes and money runs the other way: Likes fill the church, and the church fills the Donation box.

Raise the cap: Town quality, Green Scrolls and Linda

If your counter keeps hitting the same number, you are cap-bound, and no amount of selling Flax will help. Town quality, the cap, moves in three steps:

Where Green Scrolls come from

Repaired Town houses pay scrolls once each. The Building Kit I used by the early repairs comes with the Houses Repairing technology (45 red, 10 green).

House How many Green Scrolls each Cheapest repair
Small House 1 1 4 Building Kit I, 3 Wooden Kit I, 1 Iron Kit I. It also brings Homobonus home
House 3 3 From 6 Building Kit I, 4 Wooden Kit I, 2 Iron Kit I
Large House 7 10 From 16 Building Kit I, 8 Wooden Kit I, 4 Iron Kit I
Block 4 25 16 Building Kit II, 10 Furniture Kit II, 5 Sculpture Kit II

All 15 repairs give 180 scrolls, which makes 10 + 10 + 180 = 200 the end-game cap, and they unlock Urban Planner. Large Houses are the best early value: ten scrolls each, mostly for Tier I kits. The Builder perk (Building tree) gives each kit type a 30% chance to refund up to half the kits on a house repair.

Linda’s reputation gates the exchange

Linda will not take scrolls freely at first. Her early offers are one-time batches tied to her reputation, and the repeatable exchange only opens at 40:

Linda reputation How you earn it Scrolls she takes
10 Safe Harbor: build the first Town shop and report One-time batches of 1 and 3
20 Safe Harbor: bring her 1 Paint One-time batch of 10
30 Strings and Sinners: the Violin, which Albert hands over in Varnish Before You Fiddle for 1 Lacquer A second one-time batch of 10
40 Strings and Sinners: 1 Simple Incense (the Trademaster and the Apothecary sell it) Repeatable lots of 1, 5 or 10, every Lust

Until you reach 40, at most 24 scrolls get through, so the cap stalls at 44. If your houses are repaired and the counter will not budge, that Simple Incense is usually the missing piece. Two quests check this side of the system: Wealthy Clients needs Town quality 100, and Gunter’s Why don’t you like me? needs you to hold 100 Likes, which means the cap must reach 100 first. A stockpile of Town Gratitude makes that second check a one-minute job.

How Likes turn into sermons, Faith and coins

On Wrath, attendance equals the lower of your Likes and your Church quality. Everyone who can come does, each parishioner spends one Like, and you cannot hold any back. Faith and the per-head coins scale with that headcount, and so does the success chance (parishioners divided by the prayer’s guaranteed number, up to 100%). The success bonus in coins is the exception: it is paid per point of graveyard quality, not per head.

So what is one Town Gratitude worth at the pulpit? Five more parishioners, assuming Church quality has room, the sermon succeeds, you have no perks unless stated and no Excessive zombies debuff:

Prayer Faith per parishioner Coins per parishioner One Town Gratitude adds
Faith Prayer, bronze 0.7 5 bronze 3.5 Faith, 25 bronze
Faith Prayer, silver 0.9 5 bronze 4.5 Faith, 25 bronze
Faith Prayer, gold 1.1 (1.5 with Priest and Performer) 5 bronze 5.5 Faith (7.5 with both perks), 25 bronze
Prayer for Storms 0.7 20 bronze 3.5 Faith, 1 silver
Money Prayer, gold 0.5 30 bronze 2.5 Faith, 1 silver 50 bronze

The lesson is blunt: Town Gratitude bought for 10 silver rarely pays itself back in coins. Even a gold Money Prayer returns only 1 silver 50 per item in per-head coins (a little more with Cardinal).

The one exception is a sermon sitting just under its guaranteed number: five more parishioners raise the odds of success, and the success bonus is paid on your whole graveyard quality. Buy it for Faith, for quest checks, or to reach a prayer’s start or guaranteed number, not as a coin investment. Choosing the prayer for your crowd is covered in the church and sermons guide and the prayers list.

How to use Town Gratitude without wasting it

  • Carry the stack, do not pop it. Keep Town Gratitude in your backpack (it fits the universal bags) and use it only on Wrath morning, after the week’s orders and trades have landed.
  • Top up to the right number. Use items until Likes reach the lower of your cap and your Church quality. Each item adds 5, so stop once the counter is less than 5 below the cap.
  • Likes above Church quality are not lost, as long as they sit under the cap: the sermon only spends what it seats, and the rest waits for next week. Likes above the cap vanish on the spot.
  • Feed the cap before the counter. Hand scrolls to Linda on Lust, three days before the sermon, so the higher cap is already in place on Wrath.
Day Likes job
Sloth Fight. Keep every Town Gratitude you win
Lust Green Scrolls to Linda: the cap rises for this week’s Wrath
Pride Claim finished orders, accept two new ones, sell Likes goods (trader caps reset today)
Wrath Top up with Town Gratitude, preach, then start refilling for next week

The full week plan is in the weekly calendar guide.

Likes by stage of the game

Stage Likes cap Main Likes income Priority
Opening, before the Port 10 Quest rewards, Burial Certificates The cap is tiny: bank Town Gratitude instead of using it on a full counter
Port open 20, then up to 44 Battle wins (8 each), Jack’s first order, the first three shops Safe Harbor, then Linda’s one-time scroll batches; repair Large Houses
Mid game 44 to about 100 Tier I and II orders (15 to 75), trader caps of 15 to 30 Reach Linda reputation 40, take Happy supplier, buy out Januarius’s stock
Late game 100 to 200 Tier III orders, trader caps of 50, 16-item battles Finish the Blocks: Town quality is now what limits your Likes
Late story quests and a 180-parishioner sermon (story spoilers)

Several late quests also pay Town Gratitude, between 2 and 6 each: I Love You, Man, Well-Deserved Rest, Love Story and Lust and Envy.

If you give the eye back in Eye, Red Eye, the story asks you to preach the Prayer for Old God, which needs 180 parishioners both to start and to succeed. That means 180 Likes and Church quality 180 on the same Wrath. Get your Green Scrolls in early and keep a stack of Town Gratitude ready, because a cap of 200 leaves very little room for error.

Common mistakes

  • Treating Town Gratitude and Likes as the same thing. The item is a bank; the counter is capped. Use the item only when the counter has room.
  • Using Town Gratitude on a full counter. The surplus is destroyed, along with the 10 silver it may have cost.
  • Buying Town Gratitude to make money. In per-head sermon coins it returns under 2 silver per 10 silver spent.
  • Stopping Linda below 40 reputation. Without her repeatable exchange the cap freezes at 44, however many houses you repair.
  • Sitting on Green Scrolls. They do nothing in your bag. After your first talk with her, Linda only takes them on Lust, so a forgotten Lust costs a whole week.
  • Dumping one good on one trader. Each item has its own weekly allowance; spread sales across goods and traders, and do it every week, because allowances reset on Pride.
  • Dropping order crates on Pride itself. Crates left in the warehouse at the start of Pride are sold off at base price; deliver earlier in the week.
  • Leaving Town Gratitude in a chest. You can only use it from your backpack, and Wrath morning is a bad time to go looking.
  • Building church furniture past your Likes. Seats above your Likes stay empty: raise the smaller number first.
  • Hunting for Prayer for Likes or Like Master. Neither can be obtained in version 1.008.

FAQ

What is Town Gratitude in Graveyard Keeper 2?

Town Gratitude is a usable item worth 5 Likes. Battles and many quests hand it out, and Januarius in the Village Tavern sells it, for 10 silver at his first shop tier. It stacks to 100, cannot be destroyed and nobody buys it back. It is the only way to bank Likes, because the Likes counter throws away anything above its cap.

How do I get more Likes (thumbs up) fast?

Win battles (6 to 16 Town Gratitude per win), finish Town orders (10 to 75 Likes each, more with the Happy supplier perk), sell Likes-tagged goods to every trader each week, and sell Burial Certificates to Januarius. If your Likes are stuck at the cap, any extra Likes are lost (Town Gratitude items can still be banked), so raise the cap with Green Scrolls instead.

Why are my Likes stuck at 20?

Your Likes are capped by Town quality, which is 10 after Certificate, Please and 20 once the Port opens. After that it only grows by 1 per Green Scroll that Linda turns into new residents on Lust. Repair Town houses for scrolls, and raise Linda's reputation to 40 to unlock her repeatable exchange.

Where can I buy Town Gratitude?

From Januarius in the Village Tavern, and nobody else. He charges 10 silver each at his first tier; whether the price climbs at his higher tiers is not settled, so check the tag. He keeps only 1 in stock at his first tier, 2 at the second and 5 at the third, and he will not buy any back. At 10 silver, that is 2 silver per Like.

What is the maximum number of Likes?

200. The cap starts at 10, becomes 20 when the Port opens, then rises by 1 per Green Scroll handed to Linda. The 15 repairable Town houses give 180 scrolls in total, so the cap tops out at 10 + 10 + 180 = 200.

Do Likes affect sermon attendance?

Yes. Parishioners equal the lower of your Likes and your Church quality, and each parishioner spends one Like. A sermon's Faith, its per-head coins and its chance of success all scale with that number, so Likes are, in practice, the Faith currency of the whole game.
