Graveyard Keeper 2 shipped with a generous helping of bugs, and a hotfix plus four numbered updates in its first ten days have buried most of the nasty ones. What is left falls into three piles: things that are fixed on Steam but not yet on your platform, a few open bugs everywhere, and design quirks that only feel like bugs. This page sorts them, with the fix or the safest workaround for each.
Where each platform stands on 5 October
Which bugs can still bite you depends on your patch. Steam got 1.008 on 2 October; GOG, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo are at least one update behind, and Epic’s version is unconfirmed.
| Platform | Latest patch | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Steam (Windows, Steam Deck) | 1.008 (2 Oct) | Every fix on this page applies |
| GOG | 1.007 (1 Oct) | Missing the 1.008 fixes, among them the bed crash, endless loading, Inflation error and Linda’s Ball soft-lock |
| PS5 and Xbox | 1.007 (1 Oct) | Same as GOG |
| PS4, Switch, Switch 2 | Older than 1.007 | 1.007 announced for the week of 5 October; the publisher lists eight bugs fixed elsewhere that are still live there (see the console section) |
| Epic Games Store | Not confirmed | Play as if the 1.008 fixes were missing until you see otherwise |
Update 1.008 was announced for PC and has only reached Steam. No console date has been given, so the 1.008 fixes below do not apply to PlayStation, Xbox, Switch or GOG yet. The full changelog of each update is in our patch notes.
Saving: the bed is your only save button
There is no manual save and no save menu. The game writes your save when the Keeper gets up from the bed in your home. Anything you did since your last sleep is lost if the game crashes or you quit first. Sleep-only saving is among the main complaints in player reviews, so build your play around it:
- Full energy means no sleep. The bed turns you away when your energy bar is full (unless you have Lack of sleep). You cannot save on demand right after waking, so plan a save point after a block of work.
- Sleeping costs time. World time runs 50 times faster in bed and an empty bar takes about 6 in-game hours to refill. An in-game day lasts about 7.5 real minutes, so mind weekday-locked tasks before you lie down.
- Lack of sleep starts after two in-game days awake (about 15 real minutes). While it lasts, every energy point you spend adds 0.5 insanity and insanity cures work at half strength. Sleeping until the bar is full clears it and removes 20 insanity.
- You get a few undo steps. Players report that the load menu keeps your last four saves. Sleep right before a risky step so a clean save sits just behind it.
Save file location on PC
| What | Where |
|---|---|
| Saves | %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Lazy Bear Games\Graveyard Keeper 2\ (pairs of .dat + .info files) |
| Demo saves | %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Lazy Bear Games\Graveyard Keeper 2 Demo\ |
| Game log | Player.log, in the same folder as your saves |
| Crash dumps | %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp\Lazy Bear Games\Graveyard Keeper 2\Crashes |
| Settings | Windows registry, HKCU\Software\Lazy Bear Games\Graveyard Keeper 2 |
Paste a path into the File Explorer address bar or the Run box (Win + R) and Windows expands %USERPROFILE% for you.
- Steam syncs the
.datand.infofiles with Steam Cloud. - GOG has no Galaxy cloud saves for this game. Your manual copy is the only backup you have.
- Switch and Switch 2 support save data cloud.
- Steam Deck runs the Windows build through Proton, so the folder sits inside the game’s Proton prefix (app 4358690). We have not confirmed the exact path; Steam Cloud keeps a copy either way.
- Settings live in the registry, so copying the save folder does not carry over your game settings.
How to back up your save
- Sleep in bed, let the Keeper get up, then quit the game completely.
- Open the save folder above.
- Copy the whole folder somewhere safe and name the copy after the quest you are on. Keep every
.datwith its matching.info. - To roll back, close the game and copy the files back into the folder.
Back up before the Break Through to the Bathhouse Basement battle, before your first Sauna visit, before upgrading the Jeweler to tier III and before the big late-game choice. Each of those has a bug or a one-way door attached, all covered below.
Demo saves
- Steam: demo progress should carry over by itself. If it did not, copy the
.datand.infopair from theGraveyard Keeper 2 Demofolder into the mainGraveyard Keeper 2folder, or download them from Steam Cloud. - Consoles: if the pre-order DLC was not installed when you first loaded the demo save (common on PlayStation), install the DLC, then re-import the demo save.
- Switch: an early publisher notice said Switch demo progress does not transfer and advised a new game. That line is no longer on the official known-issues list, so treat it as unconfirmed.
- Demo milestones unlock their Steam achievements retroactively since 1.006.
Crashes, freezes and slowdowns
| Problem | Where | Status | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stutter, frame drops and memory build-up after hours of play | All platforms | Open | Sleep often and restart every few hours |
| Crash when going to bed, sometimes throwing you out of bounds | Before 1.008 | Fixed in 1.008 (Steam) | Update; elsewhere keep backups |
| Endless loading screen on a save (conveyor error) | Before 1.008 | Fixed in 1.008 (Steam) | Update, or restore a backup |
| FPS falls to about 2 while saving | Launch builds | Fixed in 1.007 | Update |
| Repeated error and exception pop-ups | Launch builds | Fixed in 1.007, more in 1.008 | Update |
| Error freezes NPCs and the clock, leaving the save unplayable | PS5, Xbox | Open, fix in progress | Sleep regularly so older saves exist |
| Crash when crafting the garden well upgrade a second time | PS4, Switch, Switch 2 | Fixed in 1.007 elsewhere | Never craft it twice |
| Crash when a zombie caretaker takes items from your inventory | Launch builds | Fixed in 1.007 | Update |
| Crash on ultrawide or unusual resolutions | PC | Fixed in 1.006 | Still no native ultrawide; community mods add 21:9 and 32:9 |
| Instability on Intel Core 13th and 14th gen K, KF and KS chips | PC | Hardware-side | Update the motherboard BIOS (Intel microcode), GPU driver and Windows |
| Screen tearing | Consoles | Open | No workaround |
| Slowdown in crowded scenes | Switch | Seen in one review | Switch 2 runs smoothly, but it is a separate purchase |
Memory build-up: the long-session tax
tinyBuild, the publisher, acknowledges that performance degrades over several hours of continuous play on every platform: frame drops, stutter and creeping memory use. Nothing up to 1.008 fixes it. The cure is a routine: sleep, quit to the desktop, relaunch. Do it right after waking, when you have just saved and lose nothing. Even the dead get a rest; give your RAM one too.
PC crash checklist
- Windows 10 21H1 or newer is required (the game runs on Unity 6).
- The minimum spec rose before launch to a 13th-gen Core i3, 6 GB of RAM and a GTX 1650, with 4 GB of storage. A PC that met the original, lower spec may now fall short. Details and tuning are in system requirements.
- Intel 13th or 14th gen K, KF or KS? Update the BIOS first: that crash pattern matches Intel’s own known instability issue on these chips.
- Steam Deck is Verified; the tested profile is in system requirements.
- Keep the newest crash dump and
Player.logif you plan to report the crash (see how to report a bug).
Soft-locks and quest blockers
Fixed blockers
If one of these stopped you, update first. The right-hand column is for players still on an older build.
| Blocker | Fixed in | On an older build |
|---|---|---|
| Street Battles stop advancing after Central Districts Purge: Part I or Part II | 1.007 | No workaround, wait for the patch |
| Iron supply deliveries for Workshop Hours not registering at the Town Warehouse | 1.007 (Steam, GOG, PS5, Xbox) | Still open on PS4, Switch and Switch 2: hold the iron order |
| Jack in a Boat asks for tools but takes details | 1.007 | Hand in 5 Bronze Detail; since 1.007 it takes 1 Bronze Axe + 1 Bronze Hammer |
| PR Machine cannot be used or supplied | 1.007; run length fixed in 1.008 | Update, and remember it only takes supplies on Gluttony |
| Inflation errors on the mercenary step and a garden plot stays locked | 1.008 (Steam); missing description fixed in 1.007 | Wait for 1.008 |
| “Linda’s Ball” finished before the Plague Doctor’s “Beautiful Dream” blocks the basement and Albert’s storyline | 1.008 (Steam) | Finish the Plague Doctor’s dream quest before Linda’s Ball |
| Defender’s Emblems could be destroyed, blocking zombie squad unlocks | 1.006 | Do not destroy one on an older build |
| Crop beds stuck just before harvest | 1.006 | Update |
| Potter’s Wheel stuck on Craft, Polished Stone unobtainable, a translation error blocking a quest | 1.007 | Update |
Still open
| Blocker | Status | Workaround |
|---|---|---|
| A Defender’s Emblem or Victory Banner vanishes after a battle, mostly the Bathhouse Basement | Open | First look on the floor around you after the fight: a reward can land there instead of in your bag. If it is gone, reload a save from before the fight and replay it. Some players avoided it by changing the screen resolution first. Without the emblem, mercenaries can fill the missing squad slot in the Final Battle |
| Organic Music stalls when the Organ was built before the quest asked: Agatha and Herbert keep asking how the organ is going | Player reports, still seen on 1.008 | Do not build the Organ early. Since 1.007 Church Music II stays hidden until the quest starts, which prevents new cases. Already stuck: report it and keep an earlier save |
| The Nun Also Reads will not complete after the choir sermon | Usually a missed step; a bug for some players who built the Choir before the quest | Assign a zombie to the Choir, tell Agatha the choir is ready, then hold the next Wrath sermon and close the results window. If you built the Choir early, reloading the game is reported to clear it. Since 1.007 Church Music I stays hidden until the quest starts |
| The Forest Pass lands behind the Village Tavern counter | Open | Walk behind the counter and pick it up |
| Albert missing from the Abandoned Tower or his lab | Main cause fixed in 1.008; a few reports since | He also leaves during some scripted story scenes. Advance your other open branch, rest, then look again |
| Handing in the Factory Tour while Jack stands near Gunter’s boat makes the Keeper walk off endlessly | Single report | Force-quit (Alt + F4), reload, and talk to Jack while he is at his workshop |
Sleep the night before Break Through to the Bathhouse Basement, and check that the Defender’s Emblem and Victory Banner reached your inventory before you sleep again. The Final Battle wants 144 defense power from up to 4 squads, so a lost emblem means one squad fewer unless you pay mercenaries.
The late-game soft-lock
One reported soft-lock is serious enough to cost you the ending, and it sits right on top of the biggest story choice. Only open this once you reach the last act of the story, or if you want to plan ahead and do not mind reveals.
Late-game choice: the ending soft-lock and how to avoid it (story reveals)
Kept the Red Eye after handing over all six gifts. If all six first-stage gifts (Prosthetic Hand, Small Printing Press, Trilogy, Speech Writing Device, 10 Alchemy Flasks II and Chocolate) are delivered before you meet the Old God in Mauritzio’s cheese cellar, many players report that keeping the Red Eye then never fires his “Six characters” talk. Your friends sit at 90 reputation, the Dark talents never appear and the Old God only offers Leave.
- Prevention: meet the Old God in Friend or Foe before you hand over the sixth gift, or plan to give the eye back.
- Already stuck: load a save from before the last gift or before the choice. There is no official fix as of 1.008. Some players insist it clears with sleep and the talents, so try the next fix before rolling back.
Kept the eye and everyone is stuck at 90. This is usually a missed trigger, not a bug. On the keep-eye route the last +10 with each friend comes from three hidden Dark talents.
- After the six gifts, talk to the Old God in the attic and refuse to return the eye again.
- Open the Inspirations screen: Gluttony and Pride, Lust and Envy, and Wraith and Sloth (the game’s own spelling) appear at the bottom right of the Anatomy (skull) tree. They cost 1 Anatomy point each, so keep three spare.
- Buy them, then sleep. You get one nightmare per night (some players only got theirs on Sloth). Visit the pair from each dream.
- Craft and deliver the Elegant Prosthetic Hand (Jack), Comfortable Chair (Agatha) and Luxury Drapes (Albert). Each gives +10 to both partners, which unlocks the 100-reputation help talks in Gluttony and Pride, Lust and Envy and Wrath and Sloth.
Switching to give the eye back late. The Six characters talk still offers to return the eye, until the keep-eye route opens the final battle. One player reports a soft-lock after switching late, so back up before you change your mind.
Give-eye route: the Old God’s sermon will not start. Not a bug. Prayer for Old God needs 180 parishioners, and parishioners are the lower of your Likes and your Church quality.
Freeze in Davy’s sewer-entrance scene. One player on 1.008 heard the audio with no text bubble and could not move. Reload your last save and replay the scene.
Go or Stay. Players report that Go rolls the credits and drops you to the main menu without saving, while Stay lets you keep playing on your save. This is unconfirmed, so back up before you answer. The full choice breakdown is in choices and endings.
Lost items, money and buff bugs
| Bug | Status | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Moving a stack into a nearly full chest deletes the part that does not fit | Fixed in 1.007; open on PS4, Switch, Switch 2 | Leave room for the whole stack, or split it first |
| Pre-order Sauna and outfit missing from a demo or pre-launch save | Steam hotfix on 22 Sep; console fix in progress | Install the pre-order DLC, re-import the demo save, reload. Support cannot grant the bonus by hand |
| The Sauna leaves food 10% weaker once Steamed Up ends | Open on 1.008 | Skip the Sauna; keep a save from before your first visit |
| Fine Jewelry sells for 1 bronze at Jeweler tier III | Price quirk of the tier III shop, unchanged up to 1.008 | Sell all of it before upgrading the Jeweler to tier III |
| Extra bag slots ignore pickups and purchases when the backpack is full | Fixed in 1.006 | Update |
| Fixed-price goods double in price on your first purchase | Fixed in 1.006 | Update |
| Clay storage looks empty | Listed as fixed in 1.007 and again in 1.008 | Display issue only |
| Dynamite could not be destroyed or sold | The 1.007 notes claim it can now, but the item still shows “Cannot be destroyed” and no trader buys it | Only the stack of 20 is confirmed: keep the stick (see the patch notes) |
The Study Table, Crematorium, morgue counter, stray research points and soldier rewards are fixed on Steam, GOG, PS5 and Xbox but still listed as broken on PS4, Switch and Switch 2: they are in the console section. Update 1.007 also closed the item duplication tricks (bag to bag, through alchemy and through farmer bags); for income that survives patches, see money-making.
The Sauna penalty in detail
The pre-order Sauna sits left of your base, across the Vineyard Bridge once you repair it. A visit grants Steamed Up: food restores 10% more energy for 60 in-game minutes. When the buff ends, food energy does not return to normal; it stays 10% below normal. Two separate player reports agree, one of them tested in play, and nothing in the patch notes up to 1.008 mentions it.
The accounts disagree on the cure. One description says the penalty lasts only until your next visit; the most detailed report says visiting again changes nothing and only loading a save from before your first visit clears it. If you already went, keep that older save: it is the only cure everyone agrees on. If you have not, a steam bath that may tax every later meal is a poor trade for one hour of slightly better dinners. More on energy and food values in energy and insanity.
The pre-order outfit is a different story: you can only wear it after you research Suit Up! and build a Dresser at home, so check that before assuming it is missing. GOG had no pre-order period, so there is no bonus to restore there.
Zombie and automation glitches
- Kitchen zombies eating or burning ingredients without producing anything, and a zombie at the cooking oven blocking the millstone: fixed in 1.006.
- Farm and fuel workers: the zombie stuck at the firewood holder, wheat following the player and farmers failing to produce were fixed in 1.008.
- Couriers freezing or standing in the wrong spot (the house kitchen, for example), and battle zombies snagging on scenery: partly fixed between 1.005 and 1.008. Players get them moving again by leaving and re-entering the area or reassigning the zombie; this is not an official fix.
- Resurrection: the Resurrection Table losing its prepared state when you left the morgue, and zombies refusing to rise despite meeting every requirement, were fixed in 1.005.
- Battle rewards: zombies earned no red tech points from fights at launch. Since 1.007 they get 50 to 200 per battle.
Before 1.008 the zombie Panic debuff (Excessive zombies) failed to trigger when you were over the zombie cap. It now applies correctly and cuts the Faith and coins each parishioner gives at your sermons. The limit starts at effectively zero and the story zombies alone put you over it. The check happens when a PR Machine run starts or ends, when the God of delusions blessing ends, and at two steps of Congregation Trouble, not when you raise a zombie.
Counter it with PR Machine runs on Gluttony, the Good fellow talent or the Hypno Prayer. The developers have promised a Panic Reduction rework. Full numbers are in the zombies guide and church and sermons.
PS4 and Switch: playing around the patch gap
Until 1.007 reaches PS4, Switch and Switch 2, the publisher lists these eight bugs as still live there:
| Bug still live | Fixed elsewhere in | How to play around it |
|---|---|---|
| Crematorium keeps a corpse on the table and stops responding | 1.005 (Steam), 1.007 (PS5, Xbox) | Sleep before cremating so the last save is clean |
| Study Table freezes after you insert an item, later gives no science points | 1.005 and 1.007 | Sleep before a study session. The 999 cap on displayed research points is intended, not this bug |
| Iron supply deliveries not registering | 1.007 | Hold Workshop Hours iron orders until the patch |
| Crash on a second garden well upgrade | 1.007 | Craft it once, never again |
| Research points flung out of reach | 1.007 | No known workaround |
| Morgue counter goes negative after cremating exhumed corpses | 1.007 | Avoid cremating exhumed bodies for now |
| No reward for beer or pie given to soldiers | 1.007 | Hold on to them |
| Part of a stack deleted when moving it into a nearly full chest | 1.007 | Split stacks before moving them |
Balance can differ too. Jack in a Boat still takes 5 Bronze Detail there, since the tools fix is part of 1.007. The launch build also asked 96 power for the Bathhouse Basement battle instead of 88 and gave zombies no red tech points for battles; both had changed by 1.007, but we have not confirmed whether the PS4 and Switch builds carry those changes yet. And until 1.008 reaches consoles, PS5 and Xbox players also lack the bed-crash, endless-loading, Inflation and Linda’s Ball fixes. Every change by version is in the patch notes; prices and editions per platform are in release and platforms.
Bug or design? Check these first
Most “my quest is broken” moments are conditions the game never spells out. Run through this list before you roll back a save:
- Weekday locks. Most Town battles start only on Sloth, sermons happen on Wrath (only the very first one, in Holy Moly!, works any day), resurrection needs Envy (unless a Prayer for Storms blessing is active, which lets the device run on any day), the PR Machine takes supplies on Gluttony, Town orders are accepted on Pride (the order board also takes them from your first visit until the end of the next Pride), and Linda’s concert and Green Scrolls happen on Lust. The weekly calendar lays it all out.
- Carry or hand over. Some quest steps only check that an item is in your inventory, while others take it from you. Read the step before you craft a replacement.
- Battles. You need a sword and body armour equipped, the minimum power shown at the post, and usually Sloth. Break Through to the Port, both Sewer Brawls, the Bathhouse Basement and the Sewerena start on any day. Details in battles and army.
- Reputation gates. Each personal quest step gives +10, and gates are thresholds that are never spent. A character “stuck” at 50 or 60 often waits on another character’s quest or a story step.
- Hidden technologies. Some tech nodes stay invisible until a quest, repair or build reveals them, so a missing node is rarely a bug.
Every common blocker, with its cause and fix, is collected in stuck progression.
How to report a bug
- Steam (PC): since 1.006 there is an in-game bug reporter, in the top-left corner of the main menu or in the pause menu.
- Everywhere else: use tinyBuild’s support form and attach screenshots or a short video.
- Note your platform and game version, and say what you did just before the problem. On PC, the newest crash dump and
Player.logfrom the folders listed above are worth attaching.
Common mistakes
- Quitting without sleeping. The bed is the only save. A crash or Alt + F4 before bedtime erases everything since you last slept.
- Marathon sessions. Memory builds up over hours. Restart after a sleep every few hours instead of fighting the stutter.
- Building the Choir or the Organ early. Wait until The Nun Also Reads and Organic Music ask for them.
- Trying the Sauna “just once”. Players report the food penalty sticks after the buff ends, and the only cure everyone agrees on is a save from before the visit.
- Dumping full stacks into almost-full chests on PS4 or Switch. Split first.
- Upgrading the Jeweler to tier III with Fine Jewelry in stock. Sell it all first.
- Assuming GOG backs you up. It has no cloud saves for this game; copy the folder yourself.
- Calling a weekday lock a soft-lock. Check the day before you reload anything.
- Ignoring the zombie cap after 1.008. The Panic penalty now applies, and your sermons pay for it.
FAQ
Where are Graveyard Keeper 2 save files stored on PC?
In %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Lazy Bear Games\Graveyard Keeper 2\ as pairs of .dat and .info files, with Player.log next to them. Close the game and copy the whole folder to back it up. Steam Cloud syncs these files; GOG Galaxy has no cloud saves for this game.
How do you save in Graveyard Keeper 2?
Sleep in the bed at home: getting up writes the save. There is no manual save and no save menu. The bed refuses you when your energy is full (unless you have Lack of sleep), so plan your save after a work session rather than right after waking.
Why does Graveyard Keeper 2 lag after a few hours?
Memory builds up during long sessions on every platform, which brings stutter and frame drops. The publisher's advice is to sleep often and restart the game every few hours. No patch up to 1.008 has removed it.
Is the Sauna bugged in Graveyard Keeper 2?
Players report that it is, as of 1.008. Its Steamed Up buff makes food give 10% more energy for one in-game hour, but when it ends food stays 10% weaker than normal. Reports disagree on whether another visit resets it, and the most detailed one says only a save from before your first visit clears it, so skip the Sauna until a fix ships.
When do PS4 and Switch get the Graveyard Keeper 2 bug fixes?
PS5 and Xbox received update 1.007 on 1 October. PS4, Switch and Switch 2 were promised 1.007 for the week of 5 October. Update 1.008 has only been released on Steam so far, with no console date.
My quest will not advance. Is it a soft-lock?
Often not. Many stalls are a missed condition such as a weekday lock, an item you must carry or a reputation gate. Several confirmed blockers (Central Districts Purge, iron deliveries, the PR Machine, Inflation, Linda's Ball) were fixed in 1.007 and 1.008, so update first; 1.008 is only on Steam so far.
