Choices and Endings: What Your Decisions Really Change

Graveyard Keeper 2 has one ending. Your late-game choices change how you prepare for the finale, never where it leads, and no story content is known to be missable as of 1.008. This guide lists each decision, what it costs and whether you can undo it.

How this page handles spoilers

The open text covers requirements and consequences: costs, reputation thresholds, what each answer does to your save. Story twists (who is behind the late-game events, what the pair scenes reveal, what the ending shows) stay folded inside spoiler blocks. Open them at your own risk.

Every decision that matters, at a glance

Graveyard Keeper 2 talks a lot about choices and then quietly routes everybody to the same graveside. Four decisions are worth thinking about. None of them changes the ending, and only two leave a lasting mark on your save: the Red Eye route and the mercenary wages.

Decision When it comes up A real choice? What it actually changes Can you undo it?
Village election Campaign of Thrones, Act 4 of the walkthrough No: you secure three agreements, the vote plays itself Nothing branches. You earn The People Have Spoken, a silver Story, 1 Town Gratitude and new stock at Januarius Nothing to undo
Red Eye Friend or Foe, Act 6 Yes How you prepare the finale: 90 reputation and one 180-parishioner sermon, or 100 reputation, an attic, three hidden talents and three extra gifts One way only: a kept eye can still be given back until the final battle appears on the map; no way to take a given eye back has been found
Go or Stay Last step of The Last Battle Yes Go: credits, then the main menu. Stay: credits, then you keep playing your save Go does not appear to write a save, so a reload puts you back before the ending
Mercenary wages Inflation, a side quest Yes The mercenaries’ fee becomes 3 gold-quality Wine per hire (players disagree on whether coins are still accepted afterwards) No, nothing switches it back

How many endings does Graveyard Keeper 2 have?

One. Every save, whatever its Red Eye route, its reputation history or its body count, ends in the same final battle and the same closing scene, and that scene ends on a single question: Go or Stay. There is no good or bad ending tied to your choices. The game never punishes a weak score with a worse ending: it simply refuses to open the last battle until your six friends trust you enough.

The road to the credits, once five portal fragments are in place:

  1. The sixth fragment, Wrath, turns up in debris at your own base (Even More Portal Parts). Inserting it opens Palace Politics.
  2. Palace Politics: ask Davy the Dagger about the Palace at the Dockside Club, pay him 50 silver, then go home and step back outside. His briefing triggers on that exit, not after a fixed wait.
  3. The three pair-help quests: Gluttony and Pride, Lust and Envy and Wrath and Sloth, at 90 or 100 reputation depending on your Red Eye route (table below).
  4. Final Battle: 144 defense power, up to 4 squads (hired mercenaries take a squad slot, barricades and towers add power), started on a Sloth day. It pays 10 Zombie goo, 16 Town Gratitude and 200 red tech points for each zombie that fought. Losing is not the end: you can try again.
  5. The Palace: you come out with the seventh fragment, Greed, and insert it at the portal frame in the Astrologer’s Tower. That unlocks The End of the Journey, then the final question appears.

If that sounds like a long walk, it is: by 5 October 2026, thirteen days after launch, only 4.3% of Steam players had unlocked The End of the Journey. The portal fragments guide covers the hunt for all seven pieces, and the battles guide covers how to field 144 power.

The reputation wall before the last battle

Your six friends can each reach exactly 90 reputation through the main-story and character quests, in steps of +10. That has two consequences: every one of those reputation steps is required on both routes, and on the keep-the-eye route the last +10 comes from one extra gift per pair. Reputation checks are thresholds, never spent, so asking for help costs you nothing.

Pair quest Who Where Gave the eye Kept the eye
Gluttony and Pride Jack and Gunter Port Area, near the Main Pier 90 with both Elegant Prosthetic Hand for Jack, then 100 with both
Lust and Envy Linda and Albert Dockside Club 90 with both Luxury Drapes for Albert, then 100 with both
Wrath and Sloth Agatha (the Nun) and Herbert Crossroads 90 with both Comfortable Chair for Agatha, then 100 with both

If someone is stuck below 90, a quest of theirs is unfinished: the stuck progression guide shows where each friend usually falls short, and the romance and pairs guide walks through every step of the three pairs.

The Village election: you run the campaign, not the result

After Heart of the Swamp, Jully refuses to perform the Goddess’s ritual until the Village holds an election (Election Fever). The candidates are the twins Heffry and Jeffry, and Januarius hands you three campaign jobs. Each has two reputation thresholds: one to raise the topic, a higher one to close the deal.

Agreement Character Raise it at Agree at Usual blocker
Security Checkpoint: Democracy Herbert 55 60 Safe zone. needs three wins: Eastern Districts Purge, Central Districts Purge: Part II and Sewer Brawl II
Vote Early, Vote Naughty Linda 55 60 Plague Me Maybe needs 50 with Albert, which needs his zombie from Personal Zombie Zone
Destiny Polls Gunter 45 50 Five +10 steps, two of them gated: Stars, Lies, & Contracts needs Jack at 60, and the Necronomicon handover needs Gunter at 30

With all three signed, Campaign of Thrones runs in the Village Tavern: ask Januarius to start the vote and watch the scene without leaving. Then talk to both Jack and Agatha inside, because the exit stays blocked (“it would be rude to leave”) until you do. Linda stops you on the way out, and that closes the branch.

You do not choose the winner. No route lets you pick a twin, and the journal itself jokes about the result. The election is a reputation check dressed as democracy, which feels about right for a game whose hero runs a graveyard for profit.

Keeper's note: bank Faith before the vote

The very next quest, Goddess in the Swamp, asks you to hand Jully 100 Faith, the largest single Faith bill of the whole story. Preach every Wrath during the election and stop spending on inspirations for a while. The church guide has the best sermon schedule.

The Red Eye decision

When it happens

Two quests have to be done first: Finding Old God, which opens after the Goddess ritual, and High Price, where you buy the Lust fragment from the Trademaster for 1 gold on a Lust day and install it. Then sleep at home: Friend or Foe starts, you receive the Red Eye, use it on a sealed wall in the Sewers (it is not used up) and the conversation ends on two options: Give the eye or Keep the red eye. The quest pays a gold Story either way.

Who is behind the wall, and why the six matter (major story spoiler)

Behind the wall of Mauritzio’s cheese cellar hides the Old God: the red-eyed god who created this world, brother of the Goddess of Nature, now hiding there powerless and wanting his eye back. He is also the one who tore the Keeper’s soul in two, apparently just to try something new. Meeting him unlocks the hidden achievement The Ancient One.

He explains what the portal really needs: all seven fragments, six people standing beside it (one for each day of the week) and their full trust. That is why your friendships with Jack, Gunter, Agatha, Herbert, Linda and Albert suddenly become the only numbers that matter, and why the last stretch of the game is three “pair” scenes rather than three boss fights.

Give or keep: side by side

Give the eye Keep the red eye
Story quest Eye, Red Eye: one special sermon Eye, Red Eye: build the attic at home
Building None Fix the Attic: 16 Wooden Plank, 8 Iron Detail, 6 Carved Stone
Church Prayer for Old God sermon on Wrath, 180 parishioners None
Inspiration points None 3 Anatomy points (three hidden talents at 1 point each)
Extra crafts None 3 one-off gifts (recipes below)
Reputation for the pair quests 90 with each of the six 100 with each of the six
When the last battle opens After the three pair talks, Palace Politics, one more night’s rest and a talk behind the sewer wall Right after the third pair talk, once Palace Politics is done
Final battle, ending, achievements Same Same
Main risk The 180-parishioner wall A widely reported soft-lock (see the warning below)

Which route should you pick?

Both routes arrive at the same battle, the same Palace and the same final question, with the same achievements. Pick the one your save can afford.

  • Give the eye if your Town and Church are already big. Parishioners are the lower of your Likes and your Church quality, and Likes are capped by Town quality:
    • The wall: the sermon needs a Town quality of 180, a Church quality of 180 and 180 Likes banked on the same Wrath: most of the Town’s houses restored, their Green Scrolls turned into residents by Linda on Lust days, and a church close to fully upgraded (every tier III furnishing together gives 189).
    • The reward: 1 Faith per parishioner, so at least 180 Faith (270 with the Priest talent), as long as you are not under the Excessive zombies penalty, which cuts this prayer by 0.9 Faith per parishioner.
  • Give the eye if you already handed over all six earlier pair gifts. That is the situation behind the soft-lock reports.
  • Keep the eye if your Town is far from 180 Likes. It costs an attic, three Anatomy points and three crafts that need Smithing 8, Building 8 and Building 15, but it skips the parishioner wall entirely.
The keep-the-eye soft-lock

Many players who kept the eye after delivering all six gifts of I Love You, Man, Well-Deserved Rest and Love Story (Prosthetic Hand, Small Printing Press, Trilogy, Speech Writing Device, 10 Alchemy Flasks II and Chocolate) before first meeting the Old God never got the attic talk that reveals the hidden talents. Their friends stayed at 90 and the attic only offered “Leave”. Others say that more sleeping and waiting got them through, and there is no official fix as of 1.008.

Safe play: keep at least one of those six gifts in your pocket until Friend or Foe is done, or give the eye. Already stuck? Load a save from before the last gift or before the choice.

Give the eye: step by step

  1. Eye, Red Eye hands you the Prayer for Old God. Carry it in your backpack: prayers left in a chest do not show up at the lectern.
  2. On a Wrath day, hold the sermon in the Church with at least 180 parishioners. The prayer needs 180 to start and guarantees success at 180, so if it starts, it works. Check that the Excessive zombies debuff is not active that Wrath (keep your zombie count within the limit): it would take 0.9 Faith off every parishioner’s 1 Faith.
  3. Bring Jack, Gunter, Agatha, Herbert, Linda and Albert to 90 and choose “I need your help” in each of the three pair quests.
  4. Once all three pairs have agreed, sleep once more, then go back to the cellar behind the sewer wall for the follow-up talk. With Palace Politics done, The Last Battle opens: go to the new battle marker and talk to Larry and the guards.

Keep the red eye: step by step

  1. Build Fix the Attic at the building desk at home (16 Wooden Plank, 8 Iron Detail, 6 Carved Stone), then go upstairs and talk to your new lodger.
  2. Once the six are at 90, ask him what to do and refuse to give the eye again. This “Six characters” talk reveals three hidden Dark talents.
  3. Open the Inspirations screen: Gluttony and Pride, Lust and Envy and Wraith and Sloth (the talent’s in-game spelling) sit at the bottom of the Anatomy tree, with no prerequisite nodes, at 1 Anatomy point each.
  4. Buy a talent and sleep. You get one dream per night; if none comes, keep sleeping (some players only got theirs on Sloth). Visit the pair from the dream and deliver their gift: +10 to both partners.
  5. At 100 with all six, ask each pair for help. If Palace Politics is already done, The Last Battle opens right after the third agreement.

The three gifts are one-time recipes unlocked by their quests:

Talent Pair Gift Station Mastery Materials
Gluttony and Pride Jack and Gunter Elegant Prosthetic Hand for Jack Steel Anvil Smithing 8 2 Engineering Details, 2 Steel Screws, 2 Special Wood
Lust and Envy Linda and Albert Luxury Drapes for Albert (also pays 2 Town Gratitude) Sewing Table Building 8 20 Lace
Wraith and Sloth Agatha and Herbert Comfortable Chair for Agatha Woodworking Workbench II Building 15 3 Special Wood, 3 Steel Screws

Shopping list for all three: 5 Special Wood, 5 Steel Screws, 2 Engineering Details and 20 Lace. Lace is sewn at the Sewing Table (8 Flax Thread each) or bought: the Tailor stall stocks 20 once you have built it in Town, the Trademaster only 10. The crafting calculator breaks each gift down to raw materials.

Changing your mind

Kept the eye and regret it? The attic talk offers Give it back, which switches you to the give route and its 90-reputation requests. The option stays available while you still carry the eye, until the final battle appears on the map. One player reported a soft-lock after a late switch, so save before you change course.

What the Red Eye route changes in the story (spoiler)

The difference is mostly about who opens the last door. If you gave the eye back, the Old God opens the Palace door for you. If you kept it, you open the door yourself with the eye, and the Old God moves into the attic you built, where each Dark talent leads to a dream that sends you to one of the pairs. The Dark talents carry cryptic descriptions about illusions, sinister red light and gloomy cobwebs; their gameplay effect beyond unlocking the gifts is not documented. Either way you reach the same Palace, the same meeting and the same final question.

The final choice: Go or Stay

After you insert Greed, one last scene at the portal asks a single question. The answer changes what happens after the credits, not your achievements: The End of the Journey is already unlocked by then.

Go Stay
What happens A farewell, the credits, then the main menu The credits, then play resumes on your save
Your save Players report no save is written: since the game only saves when you sleep, loading puts you back at your last night’s sleep before the ending Same save, same world, everything still running
Post-game content None No new quests found, but the graveyard, church, shops and factory keep working
Best for Closing the book Finishing slow counters like Shepherd of Souls or Necromancer
Back up before you answer

Copy your save folder before inserting Greed (the known issues guide shows where it lives). Then answer Stay if any counter is still running, and restore that copy whenever you want to see the Go farewell. It costs nothing to see both.

What waits in the Palace, and what Go and Stay show (ending spoiler)

The man in the Palace is Keeper One, the other half of your own soul, waiting with his wife and a second talking skull, Garry, who knows Larry under another name. Keeper One is the one blamed for the catastrophe: the first zombie and the broken portal. His wife wanted to be a queen, used the portal to reach the Palace and wished for the Red Eye. Meeting him unlocks the hidden achievement The Other Keeper, and he hands you Greed. All he wants now is to go home.

At the completed portal, the Old God lays down one rule: nobody may wish for themselves. Then Keeper One asks whether you will come home with him.

  • Go: the Keeper returns home with Keeper One and his wife, and the credits roll.
  • Stay: the Keeper stays with the friends he made here, the credits roll, and the Village and Town remain yours to run.

Is anything missable?

No. As of version 1.008, no quest, achievement or story scene in Graveyard Keeper 2 has been found to be permanently missable. The story gates content by reputation and by weekday, not by deadlines, and it keeps waiting until you meet each condition.

What Missable? Why
The 20 story achievements No All sit on the critical path, including the three pair scenes and the meeting behind the sewer wall, which are hard requirements for The Last Battle
Anything tied to one Red Eye route No Both routes share every achievement
The End of the Journey No Unlocks when you insert Greed, before Go or Stay
The 18 side quests None found Optional, and none has a known deadline
Shepherd of Souls (50 sermons), Necromancer (50 resurrections), Merchants’ Best Friend (25 orders), True Graveyard Keeper (50 burials) No Stay keeps the world running after the credits
Patron of merchants No It counts 11 shop plots, not shop types: 7 stall plots for 8 stall types plus 4 large shops, so leaving one stall type out is fine
Final Battle No You can retry after a defeat
Weekday actions (sermons on Wrath, resurrection on Envy, Town orders on Pride) Delayed, never lost A missed day costs one week, nothing more. Resurrection even has a way around it: a successful Prayer for Storms sermon lets the device work outside Envy, as often as you like, for 90 minutes
Character quests Not optional Each friend tops out at exactly 90 from the main and character quests, so every +10 counts
Mercenary wages Permanent Inflation sets the fee at 3 gold Wine per hire, and nothing switches it back
Keeper's note: the only real deadline is the calendar

The rarest achievement is not a secret ending, it is patience: Shepherd of Souls (1.7% of Steam players) needs 50 sermons at one per week, so roughly 50 in-game weeks of Wrath days. Preach every Wrath from your first sermon onward: each skipped Wrath pushes the finish back a full week.

Common mistakes

  1. Delivering all six pair gifts before meeting the Old God, then keeping the eye. This is the setup behind the soft-lock reports. Hold one gift back until Friend or Foe is done, or plan to give the eye.
  2. Choosing to give the eye without checking the parishioner math. Attendance is the lower of Likes and Church quality, and Likes cannot exceed Town quality. A big church with a half-restored Town will not reach 180.
  3. Spending every Anatomy point before the finale. The keep route needs three free points for the Dark talents. Keep them in reserve until you have chosen.
  4. Expecting a bad ending. Low reputation or a kept eye never leads to a worse ending: the last battle simply stays closed until the six reach 90 or 100.
  5. Skipping a character quest because it looks optional. With exactly 90 available per friend, one missing +10 blocks the finale.
  6. Waiting two days for Davy. After paying the 50 silver, go home and step back outside; the briefing has no timer.
  7. Leaving the tavern after the vote. The door stays shut until you talk to both Jack and Agatha.
  8. Finishing Inflation early. Once the mercenaries’ fee is set in gold Wine, it stays that way, and several players ended up farming gold Wine just to keep hiring. Turn it in only when you can brew gold Wine reliably.
  9. Answering Go without a backup. Nothing is lost for good, but a copy of your save turns the last question into a free preview of both answers.

Where to go next

FAQ

How many endings does Graveyard Keeper 2 have?

One. Every save reaches the same finale. A last question changes what you can do afterwards, not the ending itself, and neither your reputation nor your earlier choices change it.

Does the big late-game choice change the ending in Graveyard Keeper 2?

No. Both options lead to the same finale, the same ending and the same achievements; they only change the preparation. One needs a very large Town and Church, the other needs a house build, three extra crafts and higher reputation. Pick the one your save can afford, and read the soft-lock warning in this guide before handing over the last late-game gifts.

Is anything missable in Graveyard Keeper 2?

No quest, achievement or story scene has been found to be permanently missable as of version 1.008. All 20 story achievements sit on the critical path, and counters such as 50 sermons can be finished after the finale.

Can you choose who wins the Village election?

No. You only secure the three agreements (Herbert at 55 then 60 reputation, Linda at 55 then 60, Gunter at 45 then 50) and start the vote with the Village Head. The result plays out as a scene and the story continues the same way.

Can you keep playing after finishing Graveyard Keeper 2?

Yes, if you pick the right answer to the last question: you carry on with the same save, though no new quests have been found. The other answer ends at the main menu, and players report that it does not save, so back up your save folder before you answer.

Can you change your mind on the big late-game choice?

Yes, for a while. The other option stays available until the last act opens, and it switches you to the lighter reputation requests. Save before switching: one player reported getting stuck after a late change of mind.
