How to Unlock Steel: Steel Ingots, Jack 70 and the Steel Anvil

Steel cannot be smelted in Graveyard Keeper 2: the Bishop at the Royal Foundry sells Steel Ingots for 1 silver each once Jack's Man of Steel quest sends you to him. Give Jack 3 ingots to reach 70 reputation, which opens Steel Smithing and the Steel Anvil.

Steel is the top metal tier for tools, weapons and armour, and the game makes you earn it twice: once with Jack’s friendship, once with an army. There is no steel ore and no smelting recipe at any furnace, so the forge recipes are only half the job. The other half is a monk-run counter under the old Bathhouse that sells ingots to anyone who has fought their way down. The consolation: once you are in, steel is cheap. A Steel Sword with a fixed price of 2 gold 50 silver needs under 3 silver of metal.

Steel at a glance

Question Answer
Can you smelt steel? No. No ore, furnace or recipe produces a Steel Ingot.
Where do Steel Ingots come from? The Bishop at the Royal Foundry, through dialogue: 1 silver each, in lots of 1, 10, 50 or 100
When can I buy them? At the end of Steamy Royal, once you ask the Bishop about high-quality steel in Man of Steel
Which technology? Steel Smithing, 120 red and 15 blue, behind Iron Products and Jack reputation 70 (625 red and 55 blue from scratch)
Which station? The Steel Anvil (4 Steel Ingot), plus Furnace II with a Casting Table for Engineering Details
Which mastery? Smithing 10 to 12 for steel parts, tools, weapons and armour; 15 for master gear

How to unlock steel in Graveyard Keeper 2, step by step

  1. Take Jack to 60. Jack in a Boat pays +20, then Docked and Found, Workshop Hours, Jack’s Back in Business and Give materials pay +10 each.
  2. Finish the Village election. Front-of-the-Envelope Calculation opens after Campaign of Thrones. Talk to Jack at his workshop with 60 reputation: his calculations say the workshop needs steel, and the road to it runs through the flooded Water Tunnel.
  3. Close the western floodgate. In Water Locked, talk to Herbert in the Barracks, then win Closing the Western Floodgate (56 defense power, Sloth only).
  4. Break into the Foundry. Steamy Royal asks for Closing the Eastern Floodgate: Part I (80 power, Sloth), its Part II straight after, then Break Through to the Bathhouse Basement (88 power, any day). Win the last one and you are standing in the Royal Foundry.
  5. Ask the Bishop about high-quality steel. That is the first step of Man of Steel, and it opens his steel counter for good.
  6. Give Jack 3 Steel Ingots. He talks about a single ingot, but the hand-in takes three. Jack climbs to 70 and you collect 3 Town Gratitude.
  7. Open the tech tree. If you own Iron Products, the free Jack 70 gate opens as soon as he reaches 70, and Steel Smithing becomes buyable for 120 red and 15 blue.
  8. Build the Steel Anvil in the Yard from 4 Steel Ingot, and place a Hardening Bucket beside it. The four steel tools and the Steel tools set will not start without one.
Keeper's note: the quest shows up before the Bishop does

Man of Steel lands in your journal as soon as Front-of-the-Envelope Calculation is done, which tempts people to go hunting for steel early. There is nothing to find. The Bishop only becomes reachable when the Bathhouse battle is won, so treat the journal entry as a reminder, not a lead.

Jack’s reputation: the road to 70

Reputation with Jack only moves through quest rewards, 10 points per paying step, and the gate node itself costs no tech points. Nothing else raises it, so there is no shortcut, only order.

Jack’s reputation Quest What it asks What it opens
20 Jack in a Boat (pays twice) 5 Wooden Plank, then a Bronze Axe and a Bronze Hammer; Village reputation 10 for the rowers –
30 Docked and Found Reach the Port after the first battle –
40 Workshop Hours 1 Supply: Iron crate, accepted on Pride Circular Saw, after Oiled wood
50 Jack’s Back in Business Win Market Square Purge (22 power, Sloth) Conveyors, after Tool Rack II
60 Give materials 5 Building Kit I and 5 Wooden Kit I, two separate hand-ins Front-of-the-Envelope Calculation
70 Man of Steel 3 Steel Ingot Steel Smithing, after Iron Products
80 Factory Tour Factory rating 20 A later story step

A reputation gate needs two things at once: the reputation and the technology in front of it. For steel that is Iron Products (90 red, 10 blue), which costs 505 red and 40 blue from scratch through the bronze and iron line. Buy it while you are still fighting toward the Foundry, so the gate opens the moment Jack gets his ingots. The tech priorities guide places it in the research order, and progression blockers covers Jack stalling at 60 or 70.

Reaching the Royal Foundry

Four fights and three defense power checks stand between you and the Bishop, all capped at three squads. Hired mercenaries take one of those squad places.

Battle Quest Defense power Day
Closing the Western Floodgate Water Locked 56 Sloth only
Closing the Eastern Floodgate: Part I Steamy Royal 80 Sloth only
Closing the Eastern Floodgate: Part II Steamy Royal No new check, but the mercenaries are gone Straight after Part I
Break Through to the Bathhouse Basement Steamy Royal 88 Any day

Steel cannot help you here, since it only arrives once these fights are won. Plan on iron instead: a squad of four zombies in Iron Armor with a Battle Pike or Battle Bow is worth 16, the Merc Leader’s iron upgrade (3 Iron Ingot) lifts the mercenaries from 8 to 16, and tier II barricades and towers add 4 each. The Bathhouse fight is the longest in the game, 364 enemies over 7 minutes 20 seconds, and the game only saves when you sleep, so sleep before you start it. The battles and army guide has full builds for each fight.

Before you leave, check that the Royal Foundry milestone is active. It costs no Faith, the story opens it, and it saves a very long walk every time you need more steel.

Buying Steel Ingots from the Bishop

The Bishop does not open a trade window. You pick a lot in dialogue and pay 1 silver per ingot: 1 for 1 silver, 10 for 10 silver, 50 for 50 silver or 100 for 1 gold. There is no bulk discount: the four lots are fixed offers in his dialogue, not a shop shelf. No trader buys Steel Ingots back, so their 10 silver valuation means nothing at the counter. Buy for a plan.

Keeper's note: holy metal, wholesale

The Bishop and his monks pray to the furnace spirit for good steel, then hand it to a gravedigger by the hundred without a single question. Return the courtesy and do not ask where it comes from either.

A first visit that covers Jack, the anvil, a full set of steel tools and the casting setup:

What it is for Steel Ingots
Man of Steel, for Jack 3
Steel Anvil 4
Steel Hammer, Steel Axe, Steel Pickaxe and Steel Shovel, 1 each 4
12 Steel Detail (8 for those tools, 2 for the Casting Table, 2 for Steel tools) 3
Casting Table 4
2 Engineering Details for Steel tools 1
Total 19

Two lots of 10 cover it for 20 silver; the next trip is for armour, weapons and quest orders. Study your first ingot straight away at the Study Table: 20 red and 25 blue for 3 Science, and you keep the ingot. The science points guide shows how to make that Science.

The steel technologies

Everything below sits in the Metallurgy tab. Prices are for the node alone; every listed prerequisite is required.

Technology Price Needs Unlocks
Iron Products 90 red, 10 blue Iron Instruments I and II Advanced Detail, Iron tools; the Jack 70 gate sits after it
Steel Smithing 120 red, 15 blue Iron Products, Jack 70 Steel Detail, Steel Screws, Steel Anvil, Lantern II
Steel Instruments I 150 red, 20 blue Steel Smithing Steel Hammer, Steel Axe
Steel Instruments II 150 red, 20 blue Steel Smithing Steel Pickaxe, Steel Shovel
Steel Casting 150 red, 20 blue Steel Smithing Engineering Details, Steel tools, Casting Table
Steel Weapons 160 red, 10 blue Steel Instruments I Knight’s Spear, Heavy Bow
Steel Equipment 160 red, 10 blue Steel Instruments II Steel Armor, Steel Sword
Masterwork Equipment 200 red, 25 blue Steel Equipment Master Sword, Master Armor
Smithy II 160 red, 20 blue Steel Casting Factory Smithy II, Clay Molds, Iron Kit II
Steel Works 175 red, 20 blue Smithy II Engineering Kit, Supply: Steel Tools, Smithy: Grindstone
Reinforced Barricades 150 red, 75 green Steel Smithing Barricade III, Spiked Barricade III, Fortified Barricade III

The seven crafting nodes from Steel Smithing to Masterwork Equipment cost 1,090 red and 120 blue, on top of the 505 red and 40 blue that reach Iron Products: 1,595 red and 160 blue from scratch. Smithy II and Steel Works add 335 red and 40 blue for the Factory, and Archers Tower III (160 red, 80 green) follows Reinforced Barricades.

Buy Steel Instruments I right after Steel Smithing. The Steel Hammer it unlocks is the single biggest Smithing boost you can carry, and most later steel recipes ask for 11 to 15 Smithing.

Steel Anvil, Casting Table and the other stations

Station Build cost Unlocked by Role
Steel Anvil 4 Steel Ingot Steel Smithing Steel parts, tools, weapons and armour. It keeps every Wooden and Iron Anvil recipe, 47 recipes in all. Demolishing it returns only 2 ingots.
Hardening Bucket (anvil extension) 4 Wooden Plank, 8 Bronze Nails Bronze Craft Required beside the anvil for the four steel tools and Steel tools
Furnace II 6 Polished Stone, 2 Polished Bronze, 12 Brick Iron Forge Casts Engineering Details on its own once a Casting Table stands next to it
Casting Table (furnace extension) 4 Polished Stone, 4 Steel Ingot, 2 Steel Detail Steel Casting Required for Engineering Details; refunded in full if you move it
Jewelry Table 4 Wooden Plank, 12 Bronze Nails, 3 Glass Delicate Work Steel Zombie Collar and Master Surgeon’s Kit
Smithy II (Factory) 6 Reinforced Beam, 12 Steel Screws, 4 Engineering Details Smithy II Zombie-only: Engineering Kit and Supply: Steel Tools, with the Smithy: Bellows

Researching an extension does not place it, so build the Hardening Bucket and the Casting Table yourself. The Casting Table belongs to the furnace, not the anvil: Engineering Details are cast at Furnace II and then carried to the anvil.

Every steel recipe

“Ingots per item” counts the steel inside the parts too, at base batch sizes: a Steel Ingot makes 4 Steel Detail, 8 Steel Screws or 2 Engineering Details.

Item Station Ingredients Makes Smithing Technology Ingots per item
Steel Detail Steel Anvil 1 Steel Ingot 4 10 Steel Smithing 0.25
Steel Screws Steel Anvil 1 Steel Ingot 8 11 Steel Smithing 0.125
Engineering Details Furnace II + Casting Table 1 Steel Ingot 2 12 Steel Casting 0.5
Steel Axe, Steel Pickaxe, Steel Hammer, Steel Shovel Steel Anvil + Hardening Bucket 2 Stick, 2 Steel Detail, 1 Steel Ingot 1 10 Steel Instruments I (axe, hammer) or II (pickaxe, shovel) 1.5
Steel tools Steel Anvil + Hardening Bucket 2 Stick, 2 Steel Detail, 2 Engineering Details 1 12 Steel Casting 1.5
Knight’s Spear Steel Anvil 4 Stick, 2 Steel Detail, 1 Steel Ingot 1 11 Steel Weapons 1.5
Heavy Bow Steel Anvil 1 Steel Ingot, 10 Stick, 8 Flax Thread 1 11 Steel Weapons 1
Steel Sword Steel Anvil 2 Stick, 3 Steel Detail, 2 Steel Ingot 1 12 Steel Equipment 2.75
Steel Armor Steel Anvil 4 Steel Ingot, 4 Steel Detail, 4 Fabric 1 12 Steel Equipment 5
Master Sword Steel Anvil 1 Alkali, 4 Steel Detail, 3 Steel Ingot 1 15 Masterwork Equipment 4
Master Armor Steel Anvil 1 Tannin Liquid, 4 Steel Detail, 6 Fabric 1 15 Masterwork Equipment 1
Steel Zombie Collar Jewelry Table 1 Steel Ingot, 1 Blue Crystal, 10 Faith 1 12 Reanimation III 1
Master Surgeon’s Kit Jewelry Table 1 Steel Ingot, 3 Leather Scroll 1 10 Autopsy, Master 1
Engineering Kit Smithy II + Smithy: Bellows (zombie) 1 Steel Ingot, 2 Clay Molds 1 6 Steel Works 1
Supply: Steel Tools Smithy II + Smithy: Bellows (zombie) 4 Steel Ingot, 1 Crate 1 6 Steel Works 4

Three Smithing perks stretch every ingot: Engineer makes 6 Steel Detail instead of 4, Blacksmith 10 Steel Screws instead of 8, and Gear Master 3 Engineering Details instead of 2. Engineering Details are an auto-craft, so start the batch and walk away; just collect it before you expect the next one to start. Alkali and Tannin Liquid come from Laboratory II, or from a tier III Alchemist shop in Town; the rune mixes are in the alchemy guide.

Smithing mastery: the second gate

Owning Steel Smithing does not mean you can use it. A normal recipe will not even start below its Smithing requirement, and steel starts at 10. This is where most “I unlocked steel and nothing works” stories come from.

Where Smithing comes from Bonus Notes
Iron Hammer in the tool belt +4 Swap for the Steel Hammer (+6) as soon as you can
Iron tools in the tool belt +2 Unlocked by Iron Products, the node in front of the gate; Steel tools give +4
Smithing mastery nodes in the talent tree +1 each, five in total One red (Smithing) inspiration point per node. The third sits behind Fireman, the fourth behind Miner and Gold Digger, the fifth behind Sword Master and War Engineer
Tempering Expert perk +2 on steel work Sits after the fourth Smithing mastery node; also unlocks the Master recipes
Soldier’s stew +2 for 7 min 30 s Sold by a tier III Tavern
Third Eye Salt +2 to every mastery for 7.5 min The one potion you can drink outside battle
Prayer for Excellence sermon +1 to every mastery The God of craftsmen blessing, 45 to about 100 minutes depending on the prayer’s stars

Only one tool of each kind counts, and both a hammer and a small-tool set feed Smithing, so two tools is the ceiling. A path that works:

  1. Day one of steel: Iron Hammer (+4), Iron tools (+2) and four mastery nodes (+4) make exactly 10. That covers Steel Detail and all four steel tools. Reaching the fourth node also means buying Fireman, Miner and Gold Digger, seven red inspiration points in all, and Tempering Expert sits right after it.
  2. Forge the Steel Hammer first. With it in the belt you sit at 6 + 2 + 4 = 12, enough for Steel Screws, Engineering Details, Steel tools, the Steel Sword and Steel Armor.
  3. Swap in Steel tools and take Tempering Expert, which the Master recipes need anyway: 6 + 4 + 4 = 14, and its +2 on steel work makes 16, past the 15 that master gear asks for. The fifth node, behind Sword Master and War Engineer, is spare margin rather than a requirement.

The talents and inspirations guide maps the Smithing tree. A zombie can also work the Steel Anvil: it needs the same Smithing from its own mastery nodes plus the tool in its hand, and it keeps that craft’s tech points for its own tree.

What steel is used for

Purpose Steel item Steel cost What you get
Your tool belt Steel Axe, Pickaxe, Hammer, Shovel 1.5 ingots each +6 Building (axe, pickaxe), +6 Smithing (hammer), +6 Farming (shovel)
Your tool belt Steel tools 1.5 ingots +4 Smithing
The army Steel Armor with a Knight’s Spear or Heavy Bow 6.5 or 6 ingots per zombie +3 and +3: a squad of four is worth 24
The army Master Armor with a steel weapon 2 to 2.5 ingots per zombie +4 armour: a squad of four is worth 28
The army Merc Leader’s steel upgrade 3 ingots Mercenaries from 16 to 24, after the iron upgrade
Barracks Barricade III (all three kinds), Archer Tower III Steel Screws, plus Steel Detail for the barricades +6 defense power each
Zombies Steel Zombie Collar 1 ingot, Blue Crystal, 10 Faith Accepts a body with up to 99 red skulls
Autopsy Master Surgeon’s Kit 1 ingot, 3 Leather Scroll +4 Anatomy in the tool belt
Factory Smithy II, Assembly bench III, Lathe, Sewing machine, Smithy: Press, late Broken Conveyor Mechanism repairs Steel Screws, Steel Detail, Engineering Details The top Factory tiers
Church, Town and base Organ, PR Machine III (8 Steel Detail) and IV (8 Engineering Details), Smithy III and Furniture Maker III restorations (12 Steel Screws each), Lantern II, Large Chest Parts only Church, PR, Town, graveyard and storage upgrades

Master Armor is the quiet bargain of the list: one ingot’s worth of Steel Detail against five ingots for Steel Armor, and +4 instead of +3, at the price of Smithing 15, the Tempering Expert perk, 6 Fabric and a Tannin Liquid per piece. The factory and automation guide lists every steel-built Factory piece, and the zombies guide explains collars and red skulls.

Four quests ask for steel outright:

Quest Hand-in Steel Ingots
Man of Steel 3 Steel Ingot 3
Organic Music 6 Steel Detail for the Organ (with 4 Special Wood) 2
Green Men From Far Lands 3 Steel Shovel 5
Not in Shining Armor Yet 5 Steel Armor for Herbert (plus 20 Fabric, Smithing 12) 25

The armour order is the big one: plan 5 Steel Armor before you go shopping, and buy the Bishop’s 50 lot to cover it with room to spare.

Late story gadgets that need steel parts

Up to five one-time crafts near the end of the story use Engineering Details and Steel Screws. Three always come up:

Two more appear only if you kept the Red Eye:

Give the Eye back and those two quests ask for 90 reputation instead of a gadget. The four anvil gadgets need only Smithing 7 or 8. The three fixed crafts take 4 Engineering Details and 4 Steel Screws, or 3 Steel Ingots; with the Eye kept the total is 6 Engineering Details and 9 Steel Screws, or 5 Steel Ingots.

Is steel worth the silver?

By the time you reach the Foundry, coins are rarely what holds you back: Faith and Likes are, along with mastery and red points. A silver per ingot is cheap, and steel still pays you back three ways.

Coins. The Steel Sword (2.75 ingots) and Steel Armor (5 ingots plus 4 Fabric) both carry a fixed price of 2 gold 50 silver, and a tier III Smithy shop in Town buys both; the Knight’s Spear (1.5 ingots) is fixed at 1 gold. Fixed-price goods ignore the stock curve, so the tenth sword pays like the first. The Smithy’s purse only covers about two swords per trade cycle, but a trade window is settled as one deal, so take goods off his shelf to balance a sale he cannot cover in coins. The same Smithy also buys Steel Detail, Steel Screws and Engineering Details, at about 2 silver 25, 1 silver 12 and 4 silver 50 at his usual stock, each sale lowering the next offer.

Tech points. Studying one of each of the 17 steel items pays 1,140 red, 330 green and 440 blue for 180 Science, against 1,090 red and 120 blue for the seven steel crafting nodes. You keep every item you study.

Study Points Science
Master Sword, Master Armor 150 red, 40 blue each 15
Steel Axe, Pickaxe, Hammer, Shovel, Sword, Armor 100 red, 20 blue each 10
Knight’s Spear, Heavy Bow, Steel tools 100 green, 20 blue each 10
Engineering Details 70 red, 25 blue 10
Steel Screws 60 red, 25 blue 10
Engineering Kit 50 red, 10 blue 10
Steel Detail 40 red, 25 blue 7
Steel Zombie Collar 30 green, 70 blue 20
Steel Ingot 20 red, 25 blue 3

Craft points. Every steel craft pays the crafter red, the colour the tree never has enough of: +6 for Steel Detail, +7 for Steel Screws, +8 for Engineering Details, +9 for each steel tool, weapon and armour piece, +12 for master gear. Swords, spears, bows and armour also count toward Warmaker, 50 battle items crafted.

Common mistakes

  • Hunting for steel ore. There is none, and no furnace recipe either. Only the Bishop sells Steel Ingots.
  • Spending the first ingots before Jack gets three. Without Man of Steel, Jack stays at 60 and Steel Smithing stays locked. Buy extra on the first visit so the anvil and Jack are covered together.
  • Reaching Jack 70 without Iron Products. The gate needs both, so buy Iron Products before Jack gets his ingots.
  • Buying Steel Smithing with Smithing 8. The anvil goes up, then every steel recipe on it refuses to start. Get to 10 first with an Iron Hammer, Iron tools and four mastery nodes.
  • Forgetting the Hardening Bucket. The four steel tools and Steel tools need it next to the Steel Anvil. Detail, Screws, weapons and armour do not.
  • Looking for Engineering Details at the anvil. They are cast at Furnace II with the Casting Table beside it.
  • Forging steel tools to sell. No trader buys the Steel Axe, Pickaxe, Hammer, Shovel or Steel tools. Make them to use and study, and sell swords and armour instead.
  • Buying steel parts from tier III shops. Shops price Steel Detail from 3 silver, Steel Screws from 1 silver 50 and Engineering Details from 6 silver. The anvil turns 1 silver of steel into 4 Detail or 8 Screws.
  • Building the Steel Anvil on a whim. Demolishing it returns 2 of its 4 ingots. The Casting Table, by contrast, refunds everything.
  • Skipping the Study Table. Steel pays more red per study than almost anything else you craft. Study one of each before you sell or hand in.

FAQ

How do you unlock steel in Graveyard Keeper 2?

Raise Jack to 60 reputation, finish the Village election and Front-of-the-Envelope Calculation, then win the Water Locked and Steamy Royal battles to reach the Royal Foundry. Ask the Bishop there about high-quality steel, buy Steel Ingots and give Jack 3 of them (Man of Steel). At Jack 70, with Iron Products owned, Steel Smithing (120 red, 15 blue) unlocks the Steel Anvil.

Can you make Steel Ingots in Graveyard Keeper 2?

No. There is no steel ore and no furnace recipe for steel. The only seller is the Bishop at the Royal Foundry, who sells Steel Ingots through dialogue at 1 silver each, in lots of 1, 10, 50 or 100, with no bulk discount. No trader buys them back.

Where is the Bishop who sells steel?

In the Royal Foundry, under the old Bathhouse in the north of Town. You get there at the end of Steamy Royal by winning Break Through to the Bathhouse Basement (88 defense power, any day). Make sure the free Royal Foundry milestone is active before you leave, because you will be back for more steel.

How do I get Jack to 70 reputation?

Jack in a Boat (+20), Docked and Found, Workshop Hours, Jack's Back in Business and Give materials (+10 each) take him to 60. The step to 70 is Man of Steel: bring him 3 Steel Ingots bought from the Bishop. You do not need Steel Smithing for it, since Steel Smithing is what the 70 unlocks.

Why can't I craft Steel Detail after unlocking Steel Smithing?

Check three things: the Steel Anvil is built (4 Steel Ingot), you have Smithing mastery 10 (Steel Screws need 11), and the ingots are in reach. An Iron Hammer (+4) and Iron tools (+2) in the tool belt plus four Smithing mastery nodes make exactly 10.

What do I need for the Master Sword and Master Armor?

Masterwork Equipment (200 red, 25 blue), Smithing mastery 15 and the Tempering Expert perk, which since patch 1.007 unlocks both recipes. At the Steel Anvil, the Master Sword takes 3 Steel Ingot, 4 Steel Detail and 1 Alkali; the Master Armor takes 4 Steel Detail, 6 Fabric and 1 Tannin Liquid.
