All 7 Portal Fragments: Where They Are and How to Get Them

Graveyard Keeper 2 has seven portal fragments, collected in a set order and inserted at the portal frame in the Astrologer's Tower: Sloth, Gluttony, Lust, Envy, Pride, Wrath, then the seventh piece. Only Envy and Pride can swap places; carrying a fragment counts for nothing until it is inserted.

The seven fragments at a glance

Here is the whole shopping list for one broken portal. The number is the order the story hands the pieces out. Envy and Pride open at the same moment, so those two can swap places depending on which one you finish first.

# Fragment Where How you get it Quest Gate
1 Sloth Royal Foundry Give the Bishop 3 Zombie Power Magic Mirror Steamy Royal and Any Portal in a Storm done
2 Gluttony Astrologer’s Tower Ask Gunter for his piece, free The Hungry Cosmos Magic Mirror done
3 Lust Main Pier Buy it from the Trademaster for 1 gold High Price Lust day only
4 Envy Sluice Area Work the debris on the drained lock floor Green Fragment Lust inserted, lock drained and floor cleared
5 Pride Jack’s Workshop Jack hands it over More Portal Parts Jack at 80 reputation
6 Wrath Inquisition Base Work the debris at your own base Even More Portal Parts Five fragments inserted
7 Greed Palace The Palace meeting The Last Battle Palace Politics, three help quests, Final Battle won
Carrying is not collecting

Every fragment goes to the broken portal frame in Gunter’s Astrologer’s Tower, the tower built on a giant stone foot by the Port shore. Pick the fragment’s insert option at the frame. A fragment sitting in your backpack does nothing: the next quest in the chain only starts after the insertion. Each insertion also pays a bronze Story, which is never a bad thing to have lying around a writer’s desk.

Why the names sound familiar

The week in Graveyard Keeper 2 has six days, shown as glyphs: Gluttony, Sloth, Lust, Envy, Pride and Wrath, then back to Gluttony. Each glyph is the symbol on one portal fragment. Greed is the odd one out: no day carries its name, and it is the final piece.

The collection order is not tied to the calendar, even if the two lists look alike, so there is no point waiting for Sloth to go looking for Sloth. Only one fragment is sold on a set day: Lust, which you can only buy on Lust. Several battles on the way are Sloth-only, though, the Final Battle that guards Greed included, so the weekly calendar still matters.

Before the hunt: reaching the Royal Foundry

The hunt properly starts at the Royal Foundry, run by monks under the old Bathhouse in the zombie-held north of Town. Four quests lead up to it:

  1. Any Portal in a Storm, which opens after Heart of the Swamp. Ask Larry at home about the portal, then Gunter in his tower (the quest pays a silver Story). Gunter points you to a former Bishop now living in the Royal Foundry.
  2. Front-of-the-Envelope Calculation, which opens after the election (Campaign of Thrones). With Jack at 60 reputation, choose to look at his calculations at the workshop, then ask about the water tunnel.
  3. Water Locked: Herbert asks you to close the ship lock’s western gate.
  4. Steamy Royal: Herbert again, this time through the Water Tunnel and the Bathhouse basement into the Foundry, where you meet the Bishop and his monks.

Magic Mirror, the first fragment quest, needs both Any Portal in a Storm and Steamy Royal. Any Portal in a Storm is also one of the prerequisites of Even More Portal Parts much later, so it is not optional.

The battles on the fragment path

These are the battles between you and a complete portal. The squad number is the most squads you may bring, hired mercenaries included, not a requirement.

Battle Quest Defense power Max squads Day What it opens
Closing the Western Floodgate Water Locked 56 3 Sloth Drains the ship lock
Closing the Eastern Floodgate: Part I and Part II Steamy Royal 80 3 Sloth, Part II right after Part I The water tunnel
Break Through to the Bathhouse Basement Steamy Royal 88 3 Any day The Royal Foundry, so Sloth
Operation POTATO: Part I and Part II Dirt Rights 72 3 Sloth, Part II right after Part I The lock floor, so Envy
Final Battle The Last Battle 144 4 Sloth The Palace, so Greed

The Bathhouse battle asked for 96 power before patch 1.007; 88 is the current figure. In the two-part fights, Part II has no power check of its own, but the mercenaries you hired for Part I are gone, so your zombie squads and structures must carry it. A loss in Part II sends you back to Part I, and neither part pays out until Part II is won.

The Western Floodgate, both Eastern Floodgate parts, both POTATO parts and the Final Battle each pay 10 Zombie goo and, as of 1.008, 16 Town Gratitude. The Bathhouse battle pays 3 Keys for Looters, 1 Victory Banner, 4 Zombie goo and 1 Defender’s Emblem, but no Gratitude. Squad building, towers and barricades are covered in the battles and army guide.

Tap the free posts

The Sluice Area milestone costs no Faith, and the Royal Foundry one is also reported free (its name varies between sources): the story opens them for you. Activate each one the moment you arrive. Drain the second lock without activating the post there and you can find yourself unable to walk back to the water tunnel. Remember too that since 1.008 milestones cannot be used during a battle.

The game only saves when you sleep, so sleep before the Bathhouse battle and check afterwards that its Defender’s Emblem and Victory Banner actually reached your inventory (look on the ground too, and reload if they vanished). That Emblem opens your fourth squad slot at the Barracks, the one the Final Battle’s four-squad cap is waiting for, and the Banner pays for extra Barracks building space. With 144 power to find, you want both.

Fragment 1: Sloth, the Bishop’s price

  1. At the Royal Foundry, choose The Magic Portal with the Bishop and let his Mirror finish. The vain talking mirror sees far-off places and reveals where each fragment lies, which is how the rest of this list exists.
  2. Give the Bishop 3 Zombie Power. He hands over Sloth.
  3. Take Sloth to the Astrologer’s Tower and insert it. This opens The Hungry Cosmos.

The catch is the Zombie Power. Only the Bioreactor in the Factory makes it: 5 Wheat become 1 Zombie Power, automatically, with no zombie working the machine and only Farming mastery 1. Three units means 15 Wheat. Wheat goes in on the left side of the machine and the output comes out on the right.

If you have not built one yet, research Bioreactor in the Building tree (130 red and 20 blue points on the node, but 897 red, 37 green and 140 blue from a fresh tree, so check tech priorities first), then build it with 10 Glass, 8 Bronze Gear and 6 Advanced Detail. The crafting calculator breaks the three units down for you.

Start the Bioreactor before the Bathhouse battle

The Bioreactor stops whenever the Factory runs short of power: if your belts and stations ask for more than the zombies on the Carousels supply, the whole Factory halts. Zombie Power itself adds nothing to the Factory’s power, despite the name. Get it running while you are still fighting your way to the Foundry, so the three units are waiting when the Bishop names his price. The factory and automation guide covers power and belts.

Fragment 2: Gluttony, Gunter’s souvenir

The cheapest piece in the game. Once Magic Mirror is done, go to the Astrologer’s Tower and choose Piece of a portal with Gunter. He gives you Gluttony, which also earns +10 reputation with him, then admits he sold another piece to a merchant. That confession starts High Price.

The portal frame is in the same tower, so insert Gluttony before you even leave the room.

Fragment 3: Lust, 1 gold and only on Lust

  1. Ask the Trademaster at the Main Pier about the portal piece.
  2. Come back on a Lust day, when the trade ship is in, with 1 gold in hand (that is 100 silver, or 10,000 bronze), and buy the fragment.
  3. Insert it at the tower.

Turned up on the wrong day? The ship docks every Lust, so simply come back the following Lust. Lust is a busy day at the Port anyway: Green Scrolls for Linda and looter orders with Davy the Dagger at the Dockside Club happen on the same day, so one trip can cover all three.

Inserting Lust is the big junction of the hunt. It gives +10 reputation with Gunter and a bronze Story, and opens three quests at once:

That last one gives no fragment, but the finale needs every main and character quest, because they supply the reputation. Town Gratitude is a usable item worth 5 Likes each and the only way to store Likes, so keep the 16 Gratitude each floodgate and POTATO win pays since 1.008. Your Likes cap must also be high enough to hold 100: Green Scrolls given to Linda raise Town quality, and the cap rises with it (see Town restoration and the Town Gratitude guide).

What else the Lust insertion unlocks (late story)

Lust is also one of the two keys to Friend or Foe. Once Finding Old God is done (Davy’s looters trace the Old God to Mauritzio’s Cheese Cellar in the Sewers, a room with no door), rest at home after inserting Lust to receive the Red Eye. The eye opens the blank cellar wall, the meeting unlocks The Ancient One, and the choice that follows, giving the eye back or keeping it, is covered in the choices and endings guide.

Fragment 4: Envy, the ship lock floor

Envy lies in debris on the floor of the drained ship lock in the Sluice Area, the canal locks in the north of Town. Three conditions must all be true before you can dig it out:

  1. Lust is inserted. That is what starts Green Fragment and makes the debris workable.
  2. The lock is drained. Closing the Western Floodgate, from Water Locked, takes care of that.
  3. The floor is secured. Win Operation POTATO, Parts I and II, from Dirt Rights. Herbert only offers Dirt Rights once both Water Locked and A Cure for Wellness (Linda’s post-election quest about Albert’s cough) are done.

Then walk down onto the lock floor, work the fragment debris, collect Envy and insert it at the tower for another bronze Story.

Battles first, debris later

Winning the floodgate and POTATO battles early is good planning, but on its own it does not make the debris workable: Envy only appears once Lust is in the portal. If Lust is already inserted and you still see nothing to dig, the missing piece is Dirt Rights: the lock is drained by then, since the road to Lust runs through Steamy Royal, which needs Water Locked.

Fragment 5: Pride, Jack at 80 reputation

More Portal Parts runs in two talks at Jack’s Workshop, just inside the Town gate:

  1. With Jack at 60 reputation, choose Portal fragment.
  2. With Jack at 80, finish his Incoming data talk. He hands over Pride.
  3. Insert Pride at the tower.

Getting from 60 to 80 is the real work. Two character quests give exactly the 20 points:

Jack’s reputation Where it comes from What it unlocks
60 His five early quests: Jack in a Boat pays +20, Docked and Found, Workshop Hours, Jack’s Back in Business and Give materials +10 each Front-of-the-Envelope Calculation and the first fragment talk
70 Man of Steel: 3 Steel Ingots The Steel Smithing technology
80 Factory Tour: a Factory rating of 20 Pride, through the Incoming data talk

Man of Steel. At the Royal Foundry, ask the Bishop about high-quality steel. That opens his steel shop: Steel Ingots cost 1 silver each, sold in packs of 1, 10, 50 or 100, and the Foundry is the only place to get them, since steel cannot be smelted. The quest dialogue mentions a single ingot, but the hand-in takes three. The quest pays +10 Jack and 3 Town Gratitude.

Factory Tour. The Factory rating is the lower of two numbers: conveyor demand and staffed Carousel capacity, where each zombie working a Carousel gives 7 power (10 with the Belt Master talent). Both must reach 20; a demand of 10 with a capacity of 21 still rates as 10. A cheap layout that works: 20 ordinary Conveyor Belt pieces (20 Bronze Gear and 20 Fabric) for a demand of 20, and three staffed Carousel positions for a capacity of 21. Keep capacity at or above demand as you add machines, or the whole Factory stops, Bioreactor included. Then choose Show my factory with Jack.

Where Pride leads for Jack and Gunter

More Portal Parts together with Why don’t you like me? opens I Love You, Man: Jack and Gunter team up, and you give Jack a Prosthetic Hand and Gunter a Small Printing Press. Seeing the two of them through unlocks the hidden achievement Two Broken Souls.

Fragment 6: Wrath, back at your own base

After crossing half the Town for five fragments, the sixth turns out to be at home. The fifth insertion, whichever of Envy and Pride came last, starts Even More Portal Parts and marks debris at your Inquisition Base. Work it to collect Wrath, then carry it to the tower.

Picking up Wrath and inserting it are two separate steps. Palace Politics, the next quest, only starts after the insertion.

Fragment 7: Greed, the Palace

Greed waits in the Palace, in the zombie-held heart of the north of Town, and nobody gets in before the Final Battle. The route:

  1. Palace Politics. Inserting Wrath opens Palace Politics. Talk to Davy the Dagger at the Dockside Club, pay him 50 silver, then go home and step outside to receive his briefing. Davy talks of needing a day or two, but there is no set wait.
  2. The three help quests. Gluttony and Pride (Jack and Gunter), Lust and Envy (Linda and Albert) and Wrath and Sloth (Agatha and Herbert) each need high reputation with both characters: 90, or 100 on one branch of a late story choice.
  3. The Last Battle. Once those are done, a new battle marker appears. On one branch of the late story choice a follow-up scene has to play first, so if no marker shows, sleep at home. Talk to Larry and the guards there, then win the Final Battle: 144 defense power, up to 4 squads, Sloth only. Mercenaries take a squad slot; barricades and archer towers count toward the power. It pays 10 Zombie goo, 16 Town Gratitude and 200 red tech points for each zombie that fought.
  4. The Palace meeting. Climb up to the Palace and see the meeting through. You leave with Greed.
  5. The last insertion. Return to the Astrologer’s Tower and insert Greed. This finishes the portal and leads straight into the final choice.
Same names, different quests

Gluttony and Pride, Lust and Envy, and Wrath and Sloth sound like fragment quests, but they are the help quests from step 2. None of them gives a fragment, and none of them can be skipped. The romance and pairs guide covers the three pair quests step by step.

Before you climb to the Palace

Palace Politics and the help quests are the last gates of the story. Finish everything you still want to do in the north of Town before you start the Final Battle.

Who hands over Greed, and what happens after the insertion

The Palace holds Keeper One, the Keeper’s other half, waiting with his wife and another talking skull. All he wants is to go home, and he gives you Greed. Meeting him unlocks The Other Keeper.

Back at the tower a wishes scene plays, inserting Greed unlocks The End of the Journey, and then the game asks you to Go or Stay.

The help quest threshold depends on the Red Eye choice: 90 with each character if you gave the eye back, 100 if you kept it. The keep route also asks for three gifts: an Elegant Prosthetic Hand for Jack, Luxury Drapes for Albert and a Comfortable Chair for Agatha. The choices and endings guide walks through both routes.

Planning the week around the fragments

The six-day week runs Gluttony, Sloth, Lust, Envy, Pride, Wrath. Sloth and Lust sit back to back, which suits this hunt: fight on Sloth, shop at the Main Pier the next morning.

Day Fragment business
Sloth Closing the Western Floodgate, Closing the Eastern Floodgate, Operation POTATO, Final Battle
Lust Buy Lust from the Trademaster (1 gold); Green Scrolls and looter orders at the Port the same day
No day lock Break Through to the Bathhouse Basement, every insertion, every debris pile, and the fragment talks with the Bishop, Gunter, Jack and Davy

When the hunt stalls

Symptom Likely cause Fix
No new fragment objective The fragment you carry is not inserted Insert it at the frame in the Astrologer’s Tower
The Trademaster will not sell Wrong day, or no gold on you Come back on Lust with 1 gold
Nothing to dig in the Sluice Area Lust not inserted, or Dirt Rights not finished Insert Lust; finish Water Locked and A Cure for Wellness, then Operation POTATO I and II
Jack stuck at 60 or 70 Man of Steel or Factory Tour missing Buy 3 Steel Ingots from the Bishop; reach Factory rating 20 and invite Jack
No debris at your base Fewer than five fragments inserted Check that both Envy and Pride are in the portal
Palace Politics never starts Wrath picked up but not inserted Insert Wrath
No Final Battle marker A help quest or Palace Politics unfinished, or a scene still pending Finish all three help quests and Davy’s briefing, then sleep at home

More blockers, including reputation gates outside the fragment chain, are in the stuck progression guide.

Common mistakes

  • Spending your steel before Jack gets his. Keep 3 Steel Ingots aside for Man of Steel. Without them Jack stalls at 60, and Pride stalls with him.
  • Building belts without Carousel staff, or the reverse. The Factory rating takes the lower of demand and capacity, so twenty belts with a single zombie on a Carousel rate only 7, and with demand above capacity the whole Factory stops, Bioreactor included.
  • Waiting to start Zombie Power until the Bishop asks. The Bioreactor needs a technology and a build before it makes anything, and it stops whenever the Factory runs short of power. Have it running before the Bathhouse battle.
  • Fighting the Bathhouse battle without a fresh save. Its Defender’s Emblem opens the fourth squad slot and its Victory Banner buys Barracks building space, both of which you will miss when the Final Battle asks for 144 power. Sleep first and check your inventory afterwards.
  • Walking past the free milestones in the north. Activate the Sluice Area and Royal Foundry posts on arrival; they cost nothing and save very long walks.

Once Greed is in, the portal is whole and the only question left is whether you go through it. The walkthrough places every fragment quest in the full story, act by act.

FAQ

How many portal fragments are there in Graveyard Keeper 2?

Seven. Six are named after the days of the week; the seventh has no day and comes last.

Where do you insert the portal fragments?

At the broken portal frame in Gunter's Astrologer's Tower, at the Port. Carrying a fragment does nothing: pick its insert option at the frame, otherwise the next fragment quest never starts.

How do you get the Lust portal fragment?

Gunter sold it to a merchant. Ask the Trademaster at the Main Pier about the portal piece, then come back on a Lust day, when the trade ship is in, with 1 gold (100 silver) and buy it.

Why is the Envy fragment not in the Sluice Area yet?

The debris only becomes workable once Lust is inserted. The ship lock must also be drained by Closing the Western Floodgate and its floor taken in Operation POTATO, Parts I and II, which come from Herbert's quest Dirt Rights.

How do you get Jack to 80 reputation for the Pride fragment?

From 60, two quests give exactly the 20 points you need: Man of Steel (bring Jack 3 Steel Ingots bought from the Bishop, +10) and Factory Tour (reach a Factory rating of 20 and show him around, +10).

How do you start the sixth portal fragment quest?

Insert the first five fragments (Sloth, Gluttony, Lust, Envy and Pride) at the portal frame. Inserting the fifth one starts Even More Portal Parts, which sends you to the next piece.
